One of the most important details about Lily Potter’s sacrifice is that Voldemort gave her something he never gave James: a choice. When Voldemort entered the Potters’ home, James rushed to confront him. He was trying to protect his wife and son, but Voldemort killed him before he had any real opportunity to choose another path. James was brave, but he was never offered the chance to step aside and save himself. Lily was different. Voldemort repeatedly told her to move out of the way. He was willing to spare her because Snape had asked him to, but Lily refused to abandon Harry. She could have stepped aside, watched her son die, and survived. Instead, she consciously chose to die protecting him. And according to J.K. Rowling herself, that distinction was crucial. In an interview, when asked why James’s death hadn't protected Lily and Harry, Rowling explained that Lily had been given a choice and had deliberately laid down her life. James had died trying to protect his family, but he hadn't been given that same choice. That voluntary sacrifice created the protection Voldemort never understood. When he tried to kill Harry, the curse rebounded, leaving the Dark Lord defeated and Harry protected by his mother's love. There's an important distinction here: James's bravery wasn't lesser because he had no choice. Lily's sacrifice was magical because she was given one and refused to save herself at her son's expense. And that makes the tragedy even more powerful. Voldemort thought he was offering Lily a way out. Instead, by giving her the choice to live, he unknowingly gave her the opportunity to protect Harry in a way he could never have anticipated.
