I watched Obsession today and I gotta say after all the things I've heard about the movie I was a bit surprised that the most popular opinion about Bear, the protagonist, being the villain of the movie was that shallow, it makes as much sense as calling Travis Bickle the villain of Taxi Driver. In most stories it's the villain's actions that drive the plot forward, however in this case it's Bear's inaction. Him not telling his feelings for Nikki caused him to use the One Wish Willow, he ignored the red flags in her behavior, he didn't kill Nicki which caused her to kill Sarah, he didn't tell anyone about the Willow which caused Ian to not believe him and waste his wish on himself. Some people also like to point to the scene where he asks her what's so bad about being with him as a sign of him being the villain but at least for me it didn't sound like it was out of entitlement but rather that he wanted to understand if it was her being with him specifically or what exactly that it was for her to suffer that bad, some even point to the scene of him saying the wish was him infringing on her free will but if you'd really assume that this stuff was real and not some toy then you're probably delusional. If there is any villain it's Bear's FEAR of losing Nikki. He didn't tell her how he felt because he was afraid of how she'd react and potentially not want to see him anymore, which caused him to use the Willow. He ignored the red flags because he didn't want to lose her and didn't want to believe that the wish caused her to act differently. He wanted to change the wish instead of cancelling it first because he was afraid she'd leave, but he tried cancelling it after he found out that you can't do that which shows that if he believes the situation needs it he can risk losing her to save her from the state she's at. He doesn't kill her when she asks him to because he doesn't wanna lose her, and probably because he feels responsible for what she's become too. He covers up the murder of Sarah for the same reason too, despite it causing him obvious anguish. He never told anyone about the Willow because he didn't think they'd believe him and think he's making some fairytale cover story and separate them. It's only in the final scene of the movie where he finally overcomes his fear by overdosing and while he tries to undo it first he snaps out of it and decides to spend his final minutes thinking about Nikki instead, because while she'll end up traumatized after what she went through it'll be hard, but possible for her to overcome her trauma and some day live her life, unlike Bear who had to cut his short to atone for his mistakes. At the end of the day, Bear is just a scared kid who unknowingly messed up big time and whom it took way too long to, but at the end of the day redeemed himself, at least as much as he could.
