It was great to catch up with Fayetteville High School grad Matthew Heckman. He’s making us proud at the United States Military Academy Prep School, competing on the football team.

We track points, rebounds, assists & shooting percentages. But what about how players respond to mistakes, handle adversity, communicate, make decisions or respond to coaching?
Coaches: Would love your help & thoughts. What do you wish you could track that traditional stats miss?

Leading with love does not mean being weak. It means having enough character to correct someone without humiliating them, hold people accountable without demeaning them, and make difficult decisions without allowing personal resentment to interfere.

Leaders are optimists. That doesn’t mean they ignore reality. It means they see the situation but lead with belief that drives the team toward a better day.
Pessimism and negativity hold us back.
Optimism leads us forward.
Leaders stir up hope.

Not every bad performance from one of your athletes requires a hard conversation.
Sometimes the athlete already knows.
Sometimes they're already disappointed.
Sometimes what they need most is a clear next step.
Knowing the difference is part of coaching.
Lead yourself first.

I think one of the most important things we can teach our student-athletes is how to advocate for themselves. It is important for them to learn how to navigate situations on their own, speak up, ask questions, share their opinions, and take initiative. As much as we want to help and guide them, we also have to give them the opportunity to figure things out for themselves.

Everybody wants a coach who holds kids accountable. The real test is whether you still want that coach when it’s your kid.

Accountability is not about calling someone out, playing "gotcha", or controlling someone else. Accountability is about reminding others of standards, goals, and values. Accountability requires trust, love, and respect.

Before you sleep, remember this:
Your own mind will wear you down faster than anything else.
Stop obsessing over what you can’t control.
Breathe.
Rest.
You’re going to be fine.

Before you go to bed tonight, remember this...
Stop overthinking things you cannot control.
Stop replaying situations you cannot change.
Stop being so hard on yourself.
You’ve made it through every difficult day so far, and that’s something to be proud of.
Give yourself some grace.
You are doing better than you think.
Not everything needs to be figured out tonight.
Let your mind rest.
Tomorrow is a fresh start
