I stopped at a canteen to have some amala in Offa few days ago and a guy approached me. I'm used to being approached everywhere and most times I even interject with "From social media abi?" once a stranger walks towards me in such manner. "Sir, I know you? I was a student of the University of Offa and, last year, you came to our school to talk to us on career and encouraged us", the young man started. He was wearing what appeared to be commercial okada rider jacket. A few seconds of confusion. Do I have Twitter followers riding okada? This guy looks too polished to be an okada rider. "I brought someone here", he added. This looks like someone I need to have deeper discussion with so I gave him my Whatsapp number as I felt he was at the mercy of the passenger he brought. Not in a hurry as I had thought as I still saw him after I settled at my table, so I asked him to grab a chair and let us talk the talk immediately rather than on Whatsapp later. His story goes: He was an accounting student, and was encouraged by the career talk I had given last year and he had enrolled for ICAN ATS, passed stage 1 and expecting result of stage 2 he wrote recently. ICAN has 5-6 stages for ATS route (non-graduate route). "So what happened? Were you rusticated?", I quipped, with each morsel of amala becoming heavier in my hand. Then series of bombshells: He had lost both parents. He had been fending for himself almost all his life. He is in his mid 20s. He came to Offa from a nearby village five years ago, for NCE. He got admission into UniOffa as DE to 200L. He spent nights working at a poultry and days a student. More bombshells: He dropped out in 300L when he could not afford school fees. He could not raise the school fees when he resumed 300L. The poultry work was stressful too. So he started doing okada. More: His CGPA at the end of 200L was 4.0/5.0. A solid CGPA. UniOffa school fee is less than N400k, one of the cheapest private universities in Nigeria. ICAN is cheaper (less than N100k per diet?) but I told him immediately that that ICAN will be useless without a degree. He has to go back to school and complete the degree. Serious employer looks at your degree before your professional cert. I'm on the Governing Council of the school (he didn't know - a surprise - and he probably thought I was just brought as an external speaker at that career event. And I didn't tell him.) I asked him to go back to the school and enquire whether he can resume the 300L that just started (his set are in 400L now but that shouldn't matter). I have seen people struggle in life. Not the worst experience, but my mind kept flashing back. Someone is dropping out of school, from a brilliant 4-pointer accounting student to an okada rider because, all his life, he couldn't raise sub N400k. An amount some guys spend on a random night at a tier 3 club. Touching. Joe will finish that degree. In shaa Allah.

Dear Punch Journalist, Let's start with the outright lies. 1. Ladoja/Akala did not move us to where we have today's airport. The old Ibadan Airport was built in Bodija by the Royal Air Force in 1940. It was later taken over by the Civil Aviation Department in 1953. The development of the present airport at Alakia was part of the Federal Government's airport development programme of the 1970s. The new airport opened on 24 June 1982, during the Shagari administration. So, how exactly did Ladoja or Akala, who became governors decades later, move the airport? 2. Makinde did not sell Agbowo Shopping Complex. The complex was concessioned for redevelopment, not sold. And you will have to show us where he said it was his "biggest mistake in his first term". Which "real estate development" did you see at Agbowo? What he said in his media chat on 11 October 2026 was that completing Agbowo could require another ₦21 billion and might not happen before he leaves office. 3. Makinde did not sell Trans Amusement Park. The site was earmarked for residential redevelopment through a public-private partnership arrangement. As a journalist, you should know the difference between an outright sale and a PPP arrangement. The state explained the rationale for the redevelopment in the Governor's newsletter of 21 September 2023: a. Since 2019, the government had sought private-sector investment to rehabilitate the park. However, interested investors withdrew after due diligence because the ageing equipment was obsolete and could not be repaired. b. Scrapping the old equipment and constructing a modern amusement park on the same site was considered too expensive. c. Establishing a modern, more heavily patronised amusement park at that Bodija location would create serious traffic bottlenecks. The government therefore decided to repurpose the land for housing and pursue the development of a modern amusement park at the proposed Ilutuntun Business District through a PPP collaboration. You can disagree with the state's decision without resorting to lies and half-truths. 4. Then you lumped together Alalubosa, Agodi Gardens, marketplaces and even Shasha Market. Shasha Market was rebuilt after the devastating 2021 riots. Traders relocated to Akinyele while the market was being rebuilt, and some declined to return. Governor Makinde explicitly assured original traders that they would be given priority in the allocation of shops in the reconstructed market. But here you are, a journalist, not a "politician", playing politics with the consequences of a crisis and the government's reconstruction efforts. And when you allege that government properties were sold to cronies, where is your evidence? Finally, there is something fundamentally contradictory about your position. You acknowledge that urban development followed the airport, yet you present real estate development in other parts of Ibadan as though it is inherently a bad thing. Real estate development is an important driver of economic growth. It attracts investment, creates jobs, stimulates construction and related industries, and supports urban expansion and modernisation. There is nothing inherently wrong with government working with private investors to develop public assets, provided the arrangements are transparent and beneficial to the public. The fact remains that you can fault, disagree with and even argue over government decisions, and that is fine. But please, stop misrepresenting the facts. Do a bit of research sometimes so that you don't expose your ignorance. You may not be a politician, but you are certainly playing politics.
See, I'm not a politician but this is flawed. Ladoja/Akala moved us to where we have today's airport. Bigger space, a little far from traffic and not very close to residential places at the time. Development went to meet it. Makinde, sold/lease Agbowo Shopping Complex. Came out to say it was his biggest mistake in his first term. Sold for estate development. Makinde, sold Trans Amusement Park, a major piece of history which memories are forever ingrained in the mind of youths who are millennials in the state. That was to his cronies (turned out to be the wife of his party gubernatorial candidate and successor). For estate development. The land behind Alalubosa GRA facing the rail line at Iyaganku, SOLD! For estate development. A huge portion of Agodi Gardens, sold to his cronies for estate development. Market places, SOLD! Shasha Market became heavily state commercialized after the riots and couldn't be restored to its former glory. I can't even start to list state properties that's been sold for estate development by Seyi Makinde's government. But yeah, he's the best after Amala and Ewédú.

At the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM) South West Town Hall Meeting today, we listened to stakeholders who shared the challenges they want us to address if we are elected to serve Nigerians. In my response, I encouraged them to become reset agents to campaign with our reset agenda and I said they would be well received as Nigerians are tired of the status quo.

The message is clear, Nigerians are ready for a RESET. Governor Seyi Makinde and Alh. Lawal Daura are prepared to lead that process with honesty, competence, and a four-year transitional government of national unity.

"You're supposed to tax wealth, not poverty... I stand by my words, FG withheld N250 billion per state from NLNG dividends over the years, including under President Tinubu. The money, paid into the Federation Account, should be shared among the FG, states and LGs. "The papers are there. Let them provide the amount for the states and LGAs” - Governor Seyi Makinde

A commissioner sold his car to fund his child’s education, and somehow, the governor is being blamed. How? Was he owed his salary or the allowances allocated to his office? If not, what exactly are APC folks crashing out over? Perhaps they’ve become so accustomed to public officials embezzling public funds that seeing a public servant make personal sacrifices for his family now feels abnormal to them. What’s even more disturbing is seeing ordinary people join in blaming the governor, as though a public office automatically entitles anyone to a life of luxury at taxpayers’ expense. We need to stop normalising corruption and start demanding accountability without losing our sense of reason. A public servant selling his personal property to fund his child’s education is not, in itself, evidence of bad governance. Sometimes, the problem isn’t the government. It’s a political culture that has taught people to expect extravagance from public office and mistake personal sacrifice for failure.

I live in a country where civil service jobs are strictly on merit. Shortlisting is even done blindly with no identifiable details. Imagine me joining you to be mad at the Governor of my state in Nigeria because he didn’t give slot of civil service jobs to politicians? You can drag the Government if you meet all criteria and not shortlisted but you should be ashamed to say the reason you’re angry is because one commissioner was not given slot to bring in unqualified candidates. Almost everyone in Oyo State knows someone that has benefited from Seyi Makinde’s led administration numerous job recruitment in the state. How many of you can boldly say you know those recruited by the Federal Government under Tinubu so far? Or you think recruitment is not going on? 😂 That is the system you want in Oyo State? Afterall, politicians will get slot and be happy.

It is extensive and will be done in two phases. First they will operate on her hand and leg. When she recovers from that, they will do the pelvic region. It has been a painful experience. We have already spent so much on drugs and medications just to keep her stable this far. The pain is still there every day. A lot of you have followed this from the day of the accident.
