This is a disaster. As many of us were expecting, AI safety has become priority 1. It's time for urgent collective action to establish minimum safety standards for AI development & deployment and to protect existing IT systems. Hacks will get worse.

MI5 and its staff will not face contempt of court proceedings despite the spy agency admitting that its evidence to three courts was a lie, senior judges have ruled bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cq5y… The judges said a contempt case would be too complex for the court to manage, meaning it is not in the public interest to proceed.

Thank you Greenpeace 💚 Greenpeace activists create ‘boulder barrier’ in North Sea to deter industrial fishing Action taken to prevent bottom trawling in the marine protected area and conserve porpoise populations Greenpeace activists have dropped boulders in the North Sea to snag the dragnets of industrial trawlers fishing in a marine protected area. Activists onboard the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise dropped the giant stones to form an underwater barrier around the Southern North Sea marine protected area (MPA) – the UK’s most bottom-trawled MPA. theguardian.com/environment/…

Massive arrival of Fieldfares in my parish today. Several flocks seen, >300 in total. All silent. One of 8 species of British bird I'd take to a desert island instead of gramophone records... Welcome, Brother Winter...

The Trump administration is auctioning off leases for deep-sea mining over a vast area of the Pacific on November 19—over 31 million acres. It's not only about destroying fragile life on the seabed. Research published in Nature Communications shows how mining waste can disrupt zooplankton food supplies, threatening marine life throughout the food web—from microscopic organisms to great whales. Selling off huge tracts of ocean for exploitation with a serious risk of untold damage and cascading effects lasting decades or longer is reckless, ignorant and must be opposed.

Heroes at @GreenpeaceUK have dropped boulders in a British marine protected area to put an end to the destructive bottom trawling and dredging and all the rest of it that shouldn’t be allowed there anyway. These are meant to be *protected* areas. What is our government even doing? theguardian.com/environment/…

This week, I took my work defending Black language speakers in UK criminal courts to the international stage. As an internationally recognised racial justice barrister, I spoke at the @UNESCO World Forum on racism in The Hague about my cases pioneering the use of racial trauma experts and African American Vernacular English (AAVE) linguists to challenge the criminalisation of Black language. From the courtroom to the international stage: making the case for language justice. 🏛️

After nearly an hour of tense stand-off, two Kingfishers fight over territory on the River Kelvin in Glasgow this afternoon. This an adult male and a juvenile. This kind of aggression has been seen here several times in recent weeks. No audio. #birds

So many otherwise trusted sites are posting deadly misinformation about bonfires, and hedgehogs who may be nesting under them. PLEASE BE CLEAR: ❌Poking a broom or stick under the bonfire will do nothing - even if you actually hit the hiding hedgehog and hurt her, she will NOT run. Hedgehogs DO NOT have the flight or fight reflex that humans and other animals have. Their response to threat and danger, and even pain, is to curl into a ball and stay put, and wait for the danger to pass. ❌A hiding hedgehog will NOT hiss, or make any sound at all! They are a prey animal, you are a predator - they will NOT alert a predator to their presence, they will stay silent. ❌Lighting the bonfire from one side will NOT WORK. Their response to danger is to STAY PUT AND CURL INTO A PROTECTIVE BALL. They won't come running out. As the heat comes closer and the smoke fills her lungs, a hiding hedgehog will just curl tighter. Whoever wrote these 'tips' does not understand the nature of a hedgehog. THEY DO NOT RUN FROM DANGER. Broadcasting this total nonsense is spreading a false sense of security and is potentially extremely harmful. The only safe bonfire is one that is built or moved ON THE DAY IT IS LIT. Moving a bonfire takes less time than you'd think. There are lots of late-born baby hedgehogs around right now, who would see a bonfire as a safe place to nest. Regrets won't turn back the clock. The 'If only' will haunt you for a lifetime. If you have to have a bonfire, please make sure you do it right.

An entire life spent in a barren tank just to feed luxury markets. The science is clear: octopus farming cannot meet animal welfare needs. It would empty our oceans. And it is not needed to feed the world. ️✍️ Help stop octopus farms: bit.ly/471yPwV

I’ve been quiet on here for a while. I’m going to start sharing more of what we’re learning about our oceans: the marine wildlife, the pressures and the work of bringing seagrass meadows back. What have you always wanted to ask a marine ecologist?

A Row of Trees,' (1915) depicts a road near Oranjewoud, a small village in Friesland in the Netherlands near to where Jan Mankes lived for most of his life. His favourite subjects were birds, small animals and from 1911, the beauty of the spacious Fries landscape.
