Am now set up on Bluesky. I used the Sky Follower Bridge extension to find people I follow here. Am hoping I can switch over as I can't cope with two twittery-type things at once...
I took a break from writing about cold spots in language degree provision to review @u_lanvers excellent book "Language Learning Beyond English: Learner Motivation in the Twenty-First Century".
Please ignore the weird title formatting and have a read!

Highlight 3: ‘Rebellious’ English-speaking learners of other languages have "assessed the societal need for languages differently to others, distancing themselves from the majority view that ‘English is enough’".
I learned a lot about people's motivation for studying languages other than English. See my review - and @u_lanvers's book - for more:

I presented to the @APPGML today showing how people are excluded from studying language degrees at below average tariff universities in the North, East and South West of England (left map). We could fix this by opening language degrees in just four universities (right map).
This afternoon will see a key meeting of the @APPGML on the need to sustain HE languages provision, and the requirement for strategic government action to safeguard options for languages and cultural study, including at degree level. Really hope this makes a positive difference by the time our daughter goes to secondary school 🤞
This is one of those headlines that makes you feel the relief the Tories no longer have power. Teachers that rely on isolation hubs, silent corridors, and expelling vulnerable children will have to get used to a new DofE culture. It’s school, not the army. theguardian.com/education/ar…
