The kitchen Debate
It starts as a Cold War argument about #kitchens, and ends with #Pepsi briefly owning a #Soviet #navy.
1. The setup: July 24, 1959
The U.S. and #USSR had agreed to swap exhibitions to show each other how ordinary people lived. The Soviets showed theirs in New York. The Americans built a 10-acre American National Exhibition in #Moscow's Sokolniki Park, full of cars, TVs, fashion, and a model suburban house cut in half so crowds could see inside.
Vice President Richard #Nixon was giving Soviet Premier Nikita #Khrushchev a tour on opening day.
2. The Kitchen Debate
They stopped in the model kitchen, outfitted by #GeneralElectric, with a dishwasher, washing machine, and all the appliances of American suburbia.
What was supposed to be a photo-op turned into a televised shouting match, through interpreters, with both men jabbing fingers at each other:
**Nixon's argument:** Look at this kitchen. This is what capitalism delivers to ordinary workers, choice, consumer goods, a better life at home. "You never concede anything," he told Khrushchev, "there must be a free exchange of ideas."
**Khrushchev's argument:** The USSR would out-produce the U.S. in consumer goods soon, and Soviet workers didn't need flashy gadgets to prove their system worked. He mocked the kitchen as a rich man's toy.
The debate wandered from the kitchen to a color TV studio and all around the exhibition floor, but the name stuck: **The Kitchen Debate**.
That famous photo of Nixon pointing at Khrushchev's chest? It was taken during this tour, and it later helped Nixon's campaign image as the man who could stand up to Moscow.
3. The Pepsi moment
To cool things off, Nixon led Khrushchev over to the Pepsi-Cola booth.
This wasn't an accident. Pepsi's international chief, **Donald Kendall**, a friend of Nixon's, had arranged it. The exhibition organizer, Gilbert Robinson, later recalled the plan: steer the leaders a little closer to the Pepsi exhibit, and the Soviets, being "very egalitarian," would offer drinks.
Nixon poured Khrushchev a cup, made with Russian water, not American water, to prove it could be made locally.
Khrushchev drank it. Smiled. The cameras caught it.
In a bureaucracy, Robinson said, "you follow the lead of the leader. If Premier Khrushchev was going to drink Pepsi, we will drink Pepsi."
That sip became the most valuable product placement in Cold War history.
4. What that sip bought
**1972:** After 13 years of negotiation, Kendall signed the deal. Pepsi became the first American consumer product sold in the USSR, shutting out Coca-Cola.
But rubles couldn't be taken out of the Soviet Union. So they bartered:
> Pepsi sent syrup to be bottled in the USSR.
> The USSR paid Pepsi in **Stolichnaya vodka**, which Pepsi sold in the U.S.
**1989:** When the vodka deal wasn't enough to cover a massive expansion, the Soviets paid in something else: **17 submarines, a cruiser, a frigate, and a destroyer** — at about $150,000 per submarine — which Pepsi then sold for scrap through a Norwegian partner.
For a few months, Pepsi briefly had the 6th-largest navy in the world.
It all traced back to that one cup in Sokolniki Park, right after two superpowers argued about dishwashers.

In my interview at Sky News Arabia سكاي نيوز عربية with the brilliant journalist @TsabihAli تسابيح مبارك I said that even though there is a Two camps, however, it’s One decision-maker.
The Diplomacy Camp: VP , with Steve #Witkoff and Jared #Koshner
#Vance has spent the last two weeks in indirect talks with #Iran — via #Qatar's PM and #Pakistan's Army Chief — pushing for a new #ceasefire and a return to nuclear negotiations.
The Escalation Camp: Defense Secretary Pete #Hegseth and CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad #Cooper.
#Trump has about an 8-week window to restart major military operations before the #political moment shifts. Trump hasn't decided yet: deal, strikes, or just keep maximum pressure.
This isn't Vance going rogue or Hegseth going rogue.
It's classic Trump: let Vance speak peace to reassure war-weary voters, let Hegseth speak strength to pressure #Tehran and reassure #Israel and the #hawks — and keep all his cards on the table until he decides.

The most important question in the coming years will not be whether #Trump can get laws passed, but rather: to what extent can #executive power substitute for legislation without triggering an open constitutional crisis among the three branches of #government?
ara.tv/lhe43

In my interview at @skynewsarabia Sky News Arabia سكاي نيوز عربية with the distinguished journalist @ImaneLahSKY I gave 3 examples on the impact of #midterm #elections on reshaping a U.S. President’s capacity to govern, drawing a comparison between three instances where a president’s party suffered losses in the midterms: Bill #Clinton in 1994, Barack #Obama in 2010, and Donald #Trump in 2026. Although the phenomenon—the loss of congressional seats by the president’s party—appears similar on the surface, the institutional outcomes differed fundamentally.
The decisive variable is not merely the scale of the electoral loss, but the interplay of three factors:
(1) the nature of partisan control following the election, (2) the president’s position within their constitutional term, and (3) the level of public approval.
I concludes that Clinton transformed his defeat into a form of "negotiated divided government"; Obama turned his into legislative gridlock, focused on the defensive protection of his prior achievements; and Trump, in 2026, steered his defeat toward a confrontational style of executive governance within the context of a "lame duck" period—a scenario marked by an intensified role for the presidential veto, congressional investigations, and the judiciary as alternative arenas for political conflict.

My comments at Al Mashhad المشهد @almashhadmedia
#WhiteHouse aides were reported to be looking for a staff-level #scapegoat - outlet Puck named #James #Blair, who led #redistricting efforts, as a name being floated.
Because the #Democrats hold both chambers through 2028, the argument for #Rubio as a reset candidate gets stronger especially with the #hispanic voters ( 75 % voted for democrats) . However, If the base wants continuity, #midtermsVance keeps the lead.

The #midterm elections held November 3, 2026, ended in a major defeat for the #Republicans.
**What happened?**
Initial reports point to a historic "blue wave." The #Democrats have seized control of both chambers of #Congress. In the House of #Representatives—with the vote count still underway—they have reached 223 seats compared to 131 for the Republicans, with some estimates suggesting they could secure over 255 seats. In the #Senate, they have taken control with a 53–42 majority. News agencies, including Reuters, have described the outcome as a sweeping rejection of #Trump’s second term.
The losses were not limited to swing states; even to traditional Republican strongholds such as #Texas, South #Carolina, #Kansas, #Ohio, and #Iowa.
**Why did the party suffer?**
The same sources attribute the defeat to two factors—the very ones you identified:
1. **The war with #Iran:** Voters cast their ballots against what reports have termed "Trump’s unpopular war in Iran."
2. **The #economy:** Public anger over the economic agenda, rising costs of living, and high fuel prices served as the second major driver.
The situation in #Ukraine also drained the party’s political capital. The administration found itself caught between pressure from its base—which demanded a reduction in foreign spending—and allies who insisted on continued support. Consequently, the party lost the trust of undecided voters on both fronts.
**The next 60 days—they will be turbulent.**
The period of "settling scores." This is the "lame duck" period, leading up to the swearing-in of the new Congress on January 3rd:
1. Within the Republican Party: We will witness a struggle between factions. The Trump wing will likely attempt to shift the blame onto local candidates, while the establishment wing will point toward White House policies. Expect hurried efforts to pass legislation or push through appointments before control is lost.
2. Trump’s Likely Economic Agenda: As I anticipated, political logic suggests he will push in three directions—areas with immediate, tangible impacts for voters:
- Public pressure on the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates, aiming to ease the burden of mortgage and auto loan payments.
- Efforts to lower global #oil prices—either by boosting domestic production or reaching understandings with other producers—given that gasoline prices serve as a daily, visible benchmark for voters.
- De-escalating foreign conflicts to reduce government spending and lower the "risk premium" on energy costs.
However, these tools have their limits. The Federal Reserve is independent; oil prices are heavily influenced by conflicts in Iran and Ukraine; and any rash foreign policy move during this period could be perceived as a desperate attempt to deflect—potentially fueling the investigations that Democrats are poised to launch once they take control of congressional committees.
In short: the next sixty days are likely to see *more*—not less—volatility in foreign policy, as the administration seeks to compensate for legislative setbacks by securing quick executive or international "wins." The real danger lies in the possibility of an ill-conceived decision regarding Iran or Ukraine, intended to shift the domestic political mood.
Most important, prime minister #Netanyahu stands to gain the most, as Iran is the only major issue remaining for Trump; he seeks a resounding victory that would restore his standing and drive down fuel prices. However, his aides—especially #Vance—will be careful to ensure this does not become a losing endeavor, lest they also lose the next presidential election.
America’s #GenZ drove the change this time around; they have become better informed about what is happening in the U.S. and the world—unswayed by the influence of the mainstream media. Meanwhile, Trump’s camp remained entrenched in an anachronistic, "dinosaur-like" mindset, with their leader refusing to heed advice from intellectuals or think tanks.
I mentioned at @almashhadmedia Al Mashhad المشهد with the distinguished journalist @mobeid Mohammad Abu Obeid along with Sayed Ghoneim that the #Qeshm strike was a tactical message: "We can neutralize your threat to our aircraft in #Hormuz without full #war." #Tehran's reply is strategic: "If limited becomes a campaign, we change the game from a narrow #strait to an open-ended regional war with no geographic ceiling." Both seek deterrence, but the gap between their intentions is what makes this moment dangerous.

In my interview today at @almashhadmedia along with the distinguished journalist Joumana Al Nounou and @Fahd_Alshelaimi
د. فهد الشليمي I commend on president #Trump's Nov 1 Remarks on #Iran's #Pickaxe Mountain at a #Halloween event at Mar-a-Lago, Florida, President Donald Trump stated that US operations had degraded most of Iran's military and nuclear capabilities, but:
> "We've knocked out their nuclear. We still have to take care of, I would say, one or two sites, but we can do that in ten minutes."
> "You probably could look at Pickaxe Mountain, you have to take care of that."
Pickaxe Mountain (Persian: Kuh-e Kolang Gaz La) is an excavated tunnel complex 1.5-2 km south of #Natanz in Isfahan province. US and #Israeli intelligence assess it as a hardened, deeply buried reserve #nuclear site. Iran denies any nuclear activity at the site. Its depth makes it beyond the reach of conventional bunker-busters used on Natanz and Fordow in June 2025.
The Diplomatic Context:
The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump spoke with Israeli PM on Saturday morning, hours before the Florida remarks. The Journal notes #Netanyahu has been the primary advocate for resuming strikes to degrade and ultimately topple the Iranian regime.
No official readout confirmed an internal US split, though open-source reporting since July indicates a policy debate between a restrained approach (limited strikes on nuclear infrastructure) vs. an expansive approach (regime change).
The November 4 Timeline:
This is NOT a US official announcement. According to and Clash Report, three senior Gulf Arab officials, speaking anonymously, said Washington briefed Gulf capitals to prepare for a "short, intense" round of strikes as early as Nov 4 - one day after the US midterm elections on Nov 3.
All reports caveat: "The report is unconfirmed by Washington."
The Force Posture - What is Observable:
- Two US carrier strike groups are currently in the #CENTCOM theater, a third (USS Theodore Roosevelt) is en route from the Pacific.
- Additional Patriot batteries and radar assets are reportedly being repositioned to Israel and Gulf states - consistent with pre-strike defensive measures.
- Two US officials told media that forces in theater could launch major operations within 96 hours of a presidential order.
Note:
The 10-minute framing is political signaling, not a technical assessment. Destroying a mountain facility requires sustained operations, not a single strike. The mention of Pickaxe Mountain by name elevates it from a covert contingency to an overt red line, which increases pressure on Qatari-mediated negotiations and on Gulf states concerned about Iranian retaliation.

In my interview at Sky News Arabia سكاي نيوز عربية @SkyNewsArabia_B @skynewsarabia with the distinguished journalist @ImaneLahSKY I said that since 2016, #Iran has approached its relationship with #Washington with a "wait for the next administration" mindset—a strategy that has come at a high cost:
**1. Why won’t this influence #Trump?**
For Trump, the Iran dossier is not merely a domestic electoral card; it is a core, fixed tenet of his political doctrine:
- His 2018 withdrawal from the #nuclear deal was not an election-driven move, but a decision based on principle.
- The "maximum pressure" policy and the sanctions regime are managed through established institutions—the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the #Pentagon, and the National Security Council. Even if the #Republicans were to lose control of #Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, the President’s authority over foreign policy and sanctions would remain virtually absolute.
- Domestically, Trump benefits from projecting strength against Iran, not from de-escalation. Any retreat would be perceived by his base as a sign of weakness.
**2. Why is Iran’s gamble misguided?**
#Tehran is betting that domestic U.S. economic pressures or a potential Democratic resurgence will force Washington to return to a new agreement. This gamble overlooks three key realities:
- The consensus in Washington against Tehran is now bipartisan, not limited to the Republican Party. Today’s #Democrats take an even harder line than the Obama administration regarding Iran’s #missile and #drone programs, as well as its regional proxies.
- A "wait-and-see" approach effectively gives #Israel a freer hand to act, while providing Trump with a pretext to further escalate sanctions.
- It is the Iranian #economy—not the American economy—that suffers and bleeds while this waiting game continues. Historically, the only strategy that has influenced Trump’s decisions is not elections, but rather the language of power and direct interests—such as a credible threat to key transit corridors, or a major, clear-cut deal that prevents Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons while providing economic guarantees.
