The minimum time in graduate school needed to spell "Oncorhynchus" on your first try is 1 year. This may be my only academic tweet ever, because I've never had another thought that was suitable for #AcademicTwitter #FishBiology

Today @DrewHowarth and I asked @NSERC_CRSNG why the grad student funding has not increased in 20 years (!!!). Fingers crossed for the overdue and desperately needed increase in scholarships for #Budget2024 #SupportOurScience
A warm welcome at @Carleton_U today: great discussions with their leadership, researchers & students about @NSERC_CRSNG programs + a tour of the Cryogenic Noble Liquid Detector Development Lab - focused on experiments for the detection & identification of dark matter. Very cool!

I took on a big topic, and there are 1,000 things I could say about it, so I'll settle for this: I hope this work facilitates more harmonized and synergistic efforts to manage, conserve, and understand these systems.

Can anyone ID this creepy fella? Flushed out of some silt while retrieving an acoustic receiver from a southern Ontario river yesterday. Length was 3–4 inches.

NEW PAPER! Without biological assessments, we turned to #LocalEcologicalKnowledge from angler surveys & found that #Permit fishing quality in the #FloridaKeys declined likely from threats including water quality, boat traffic & habitat quality #ConsSocSci bit.ly/P_FL

Less than a year ago, we surveyed anglers about recreational fishing during the pandemic. Unfortunately, current pandemic conditions look very similar to what they were at this time last year. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Personally, I wonder if it's reasonable/realistic to demand that people comply fully with restrictions that target safe activities such as outdoor recreation.

I also worry about the crowding that will ensue in 'spillover' areas, where people will flock because their local provincial and/or municipal parks are closed. Authoritative approaches, lacking proper incentivization and coherence, may receive minimal compliance.

Among other things, recreational anglers expressed their desire for clear communication and a consistent, informed response to subsequent pandemic waves. Anglers also testified to the importance of outdoor time and pandemic-safe recreation for their mental and physical health.
