As someone who has struggled with both depression and meth addiction, I found this OpEd compelling. We need more holistic approaches that combine mental health services, substance abuse treatment and housing. Glad CA is starting to move in this direction.

Let's stop the false narrative that most unhoused people want to be homeless and must be forced into shelters.
If we offer what works - real, longterm places to live with the right services - we can eliminate encampments and save lives. We don't need to pit housed vs unhoused.
