‼️ Ransomware hackers threw a new custom backdoor and at least 13 security-killing tools at one US organisation in about an hour. Then they set AnyDesk to run in Safe Mode, where most security tools don't fully work. Two of those tools were disguised as Symantec's own software. Symantec says the attackers also dropped five signed but vulnerable drivers, to switch off security software.

Imagine beginning construction of a cathedral in 1220 and creating something that would still leave people speechless more than 800 years later Salisbury Cathedral is a remarkable example of what medieval builders were capable of achieving

‼️ German police are hunting a suspect in the drone bomb attack on Leipzig airport with an AI-generated image of a hooded person on an e-bike. Germany's federal crime agency, the BKA, says the person was around the suspected launch site in the days before the 4 August attack, dressed unusually warmly for midsummer. Posters and billboards with the image now hang in nearby towns. The drone was found next to Ukrainian Antonov cargo planes. Its bomb apparently failed only because the detonator had torn off. Germany officially blames Russia. Prosecutors already have two named suspects.

Algorithms have such a deep impact on how you perceive the world. In politics especially. The left will show you the worst people on the right, and the right will show you the worst people on the left. Don’t fall for it. Lots of lovely people out there!

Australian officials have issued a reminder to shut your car doors after one wombat helped himself to several passenger seats. The notice followed complaints from visitors at a popular picnic area, where the same wombat reportedly kept climbing into parked cars while people unloaded bags or packed up lunch. At first, staff thought they were receiving several calls about one incident. Then they realized the cars were different. The passenger wasn’t. One couple waited nearly an hour before he climbed out. Another visitor said he settled into the seat before she’d even finished putting her things in the boot. Officials asked visitors to keep their doors closed and contact staff if they found an unexpected occupant. After the photos spread online, a park spokesperson clarified the situation. “He hasn’t been abandoned. He lives here. Please stop calling to say someone’s left their wombat in a car.”

Astonishingly, nobody died: more than 50 miners got out. Days later, nine of the barges popped back up like corks. The lake refilled with salty Gulf water, so a shallow freshwater lake is now a deep brackish one. 3/3

The whirlpool swallowed the rig, 11 barges, a tugboat, trees and 26 ha (65 acres) of land. Then the canal that normally drains the lake to the Gulf ran backwards, and for a couple of days Louisiana had a waterfall about 46 m (150 ft) high. 2/3

In 1980 an oil rig in Louisiana drilled a hole in the bottom of a lake. Within hours the whole lake had vanished down it. Lake Peigneur sat above a working salt mine. The drill punched into it at 374 m (1,228 ft), and the lake drained into the caverns like a bath. 1/3 (Illustrative image)

Imagine commissioning the ultimate, no-budget piece of technology only for it to take 44 years to finish, meaning neither you nor the genius creator would ever live to see it. That’s the tragic, jaw-dropping backstory of Breguet No. 160, commissioned in 1783 by an anonymous admirer of Marie Antoinette. The only rule? Every single known watch function had to be built in, and gold had to replace brass wherever possible. The master horologist Abraham-Louis Breguet died before finishing it, and his son finally completed it in 1827 long after the Queen had met the guillotine. It is basically the 18th-century equivalent of a smartphone, but powered entirely by springs and gears: 1. The Brains: It has a perpetual calendar, tells the moon phases, tracks the temperature, and has a minute repeater that chimes the time out loud. 2. Never-Ending Power: It winds itself (perpétuelle) via a heavy oscillating platinum weight that moves as you walk. 3. The Magic: Inside sits Breguet’s "pare-chute" shock absorber, plus natural rubies and sapphires to stop the gears from wearing down. You can actually see the microscopic mechanical soul of this watch through its rock-crystal face. No screens, no batteries just centuries-old clockwork that still works.
