The UN is NOT "a grouping of states." It is a universal forum for global diplomacy and conflict prevention established by the UN Charter after World War 2, 'to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war' by working to maintain international peace through the peaceful resolution of disputes between states. It is *the* source of international legitimacy for peacekeeping operations. A UNSC mandate means a peacekeeping mission conforms to the fullest extent possible with international law and is not being pursued over the objections of a superpower. A neutral country that wishes to remain neutral and avoid getting drawn into superpower rivalries should restrict itself to UN-mandated peacekeeping missions. The EU is a regional bloc of states, attempting to assert itself as a geopolitical actor with strategic interests, increasingly by force projection. It isn't remotely the same thing as the UN. Increasingly, the EU's military missions are explicitly perceived as part of the EU's conflict with a superpower. A MINIMUM test for ensuring an EU military mission is compatible with Ireland's neutrality is by requiring that it also enjoys a UN mandate before deploying to it. If it has no UN mandate, there is an unacceptable risk it is likely to make Ireland party to a conflict between superpowers, i.e. not neutral. A neutral country has no place becoming involved in such a mission. The fact that the government has already announced its plans to involve Ireland in TWO such missions after the Triple Lock is abolished (EUNAVFOR Irini and EUSM Lebanon) is all the proof we need that FFG in government cannot under any circumstances be trusted to maintain our neutrality, and must be compelled to do so by force of law. The Triple Lock must remain in place.
Some people seem to think that a mandate for a mission that comes from the UN is inherently superior to one devised by the members of the European Union. That is not the case. The UN does not possess any unworldly wisdom. It is a grouping of states just like the EU. We should examine UN & EU mandates with the same rigour and work out what works best for us. We will have a bigger say in any EU mandated mission.

Sound familiar? Wall Street is bundling AI data centre debt into bonds and selling it on to pension funds. When the AI bubble bursts, and it will, guess who's going to be left holding the bag of shit? #AIBubble

The 'Campus Anti Genocide Coalition' (CAGC) stands firmly with students at the @uniofgalway in opposing a "shameful monoply contract" with Coca-Cola. CAGC came together to oppose the university's research partnership with @TechnionLive, known as the "research wing" of the IDF.

A tv ad about it is bound to come off patronising and land wrong, but I’ll defend to the hilt the idea we should teach children to establish their own physical boundaries. Physical affection isn’t even genuine if it’s forced.
🇮🇪 The Irish state has published an advert discouraging grandparents from hugging their grandchildren, as part of a campaign designed to promote "consent".

Govt Misinformation - If Ireland deploys troops to proposed ‘EU Support Mission’ to Lebanon without Triple Lock -It will NOT be a Blue Helmet Peacekeeping Mission - It will be an EU (Von Der Leyen ‘We Stand With Israel’) Peace Enforcement Mission to Disarm Hezbollah -A CIVIL WAR
The vast majority of people want Ireland to maintain our proud tradition of peacekeeping. Reforming the triple lock ensures our decisions on participation in peacekeeping missions are not dictated by a veto from Russia, China, or the United States.

One thing this should expose is the idea that intergenerational war over housing is inevitable. Maricarmen fought in the renters' union until the end, side by side with young people. What united them? Their social class: tenants v the landlords. teapaw.org/eldiarioes/status/2107…

Very moving and heartbreaking hearing the reality of life under Israeli occupation, Shatha Al-Azzah reminded us all the need and value of solidarity. With thanks to @ProfJohnBarry @BDTUC

This weeks column in the @irishexaminer. It usually runs to 1,000 words. It took 800 to name SOME of the ordinary things Israel has illegally denied the people of Gaza. I could fill another column and still not exhaust the list. There is almost no opinion here, just documented facts, each one a small but essential piece of existence weaponised to collectively punish a people irishexaminer.com/opinion/co…?

Palestinians call for withdrawal of labor from all aspects of Ireland vs genocidal Israel Nations League matches. Where institutions fail to uphold their moral and legal obligations not to facilitate or normalize grave crimes such as genocide, workers can play a crucial role.

Eight years of Free State inertia, paralysis and anti-intellectualism to block the Occupied Territories Bill and now outdone by the imperial core, by a state occupying Ireland – illustrative too of the bill’s shortcomings, that it’s perfectly compatible with the Zionist project

🇨🇺♥️This September 1st, amid an energy blockade, fuel shortages, limited transportation, and resources at rock bottom, Cuba opens its schools. More than 1.5 million kids return to the classrooms, despite everything, remains a national celebration: the celebration of learning, of coming together, and of refusing to give up.
