Happy weekend. Hope y'all are out there touching grass and getting the sun on your face. Droppin' in today with a longwinded but heartfelt/vulnerable update.❤️ First, so excited for the ninth drop. The art is...sigh. Just really good. I am proud of it. I have been working my ass off in the studio, pushing my practice into its edges. I am becoming...unfettered. In a single session I often feel the entire spectrum of human emotion: serenity, excitement, frustration, fear, disappointment, elation, love, anxiety, and exhaustion. To be human in this time- a fascinating experience. And also, my work has been challenging. Developing a new technique for painting (without a roadmap) requires so much patience, strategizing, forethought, and failure. There are infinite rungs on this ladder. And slowly but surely, one step at a time, my process has been evolving. Each painting is asking for more time, discernment, and deliberation. The rewards are starting to appear: I can feel my art becoming more precious. This is hard to explain. It is a feeling, a knowing. I believe it is becoming more precious because I am more generous with each painting: I give it more of my attention, allow room for curiosity. I am learning what it means to force myself on the work, and recognizing when I do it. In part, I am sharing all this as an explanation for why this drop is taking longer than usual. (For the record, we plan to release the new work sometime in mid-August.) But mostly, I am sharing all this because I am starting to get really excited. Not just because of the new paintings. But because of how this story--the story of Scales-- is unfolding. I'm starting to understand the truly unspeakable value that I am receiving as an artist by committing to create such a massive body of cohesive work, and to do so publicly. I have started to see this one thing as the most valuable boon of the entire project. A new wellspring of gratitude has lead to much contemplation on radical generosity- the driving force behind this project. To practice radical generosity is to give abundantly of what one has, both materially and in spirit, without the expectation of return. Or rather, it seems to me, for one's expectation of return to be rooted firmly in the unknown, and shored up by the principles of nature. To give & receive effortlessy, without overthinking it. To understand oneself as part of a greater whole, but wholly unique and integral. Sort of like Scales in painting. To know that the purest and most beautiful expression is revealed when you stop thinking about yourself, and surrender to what's in front of you, finding ways to nurture it so that its true, unsullied nature can be revealed. This is how I want to practice art. This is how I want to live. This is how I want to love. Here are 2 Scales from the painting "Spiritu Astra", a painting created from a prompt by our community member @EMillerEth. The title is latin and translates to "Spirit from/of the Stars" .
