AI agents can write code, run tests and submit pull requests. But does that give them the authority to make decisions in an open source project?
In a new article for Techstrong Council, @t_mashologu explores what happens when AI agents begin participating in open source communities and why governance needs to become understandable to both humans and machines.
The key distinction: an agent's ability to act does not give it the authority to decide. Community governance must still determine what agents can do, when human approval is required and who remains accountable.

🥁 New project release!
Eclipse INCEpTION offers a browser-based platform for semantic text annotation. Text annotation is the task of adding structured information to documents: marking which spans mention a person, a disease or a gene, recording how those mentions relate to each other, and linking each one to a concept in a knowledge base.

AI can help developers write code faster. But are we also making sure it helps them become better engineers?
In this blog, Christopher Guindon explores an important challenge for software engineering teams: how to embrace AI-assisted development without losing the problem-solving experience that builds technical judgement.

🎉 Eclipse SW360 has graduated to mature status!
For over a decade, the Eclipse SW360 community has worked to develop an open source solution for managing software components and compliance information across organisations.
SW360 provides a central catalogue for tracking software components, licences, projects, bills of materials, and vulnerability information. It also integrates with tools such as FOSSology to support software analysis and compliance workflows. Its graduation recognises the project's technical development and the community's commitment to open, collaborative processes.
Congratulations to the Eclipse SW360 team and everyone who has contributed to this milestone!

As Eclipse Foundation Executive Director @mmilinkov puts it, model weights alone do not necessarily provide the transparency, control, or independent governance organisations may need.
That point is picked up by Amit Eyal Govrin in his latest article examining the Sovereign AI Foundation. He explores what sovereignty looks like beyond access to a model, including infrastructure, governance, the ability to change direction, and the technologies organisations actually deploy.

Many organisations already have software security measures. The harder question is whether those measures are visible, repeatable, and documented.
That is one of the patterns emerging from early use of the OCCTET CRA Self-Assessment Portal.
The new OCCTET toolkit is designed around that implementation gap, helping SMEs understand where they stand and connect assessment with software composition analysis, vulnerability management, SBOMs, VEX, and compliance evidence.
The tools are free, open source, and available for organisations and projects to test today.
