It blows my mind how economists keep coming up with the same stupid solutions: cut government spending, slash taxes for the rich, raise taxes on the poor, scrap welfare benefits, deregulate financial markets, get rid of basically everything… And then, time and time again, they act surprised when the result is chaos, unemployment, poverty, depression…
MMT tells you a monetarily sovereign nation can issue all the currency/debt it wants and nothing will happen, claiming that currency and market volatility can easily be eliminated by cancelling the capital account. This nonsense can only be promoted by someone that does not understand that the currency collapse and creditworthiness slump are driven by domestic citizens and savers rejecting the local currency; it is not an evil conspiracy of foreign investors. Furthermore, no nation is monetarily sovereign. It always depends on demand. Try to force use or restrict flow, and the currency is worth nothing. And local citizens are the first to reject an increasingly worthless currency issued by an irresponsible government. You are welcome

You all need to understand that there is a well-funded movement to kill Wikipedia as an institution. The dream of an internet that provided universal access to knowledge was a mirage. It threatened too many powerful people, so now we have AI summaries and illiteracy.
Can we also talk about how Wikipedia entries are no longer at the top of a search 😭

An orphaned teenager made an altar in Gaza and now people come and pray in his tent Khaled (12) travels on foot, with a wheelbarrow. Two years ago he was standing on the balcony waiting for his father to come home. His three younger siblings were building a ‘theme park’ with furniture. Register and fake entrance tickets included. Mum was teaching Arabic via some online platform to an 81 year old Italian guy. Perhaps the oldest learner of Arabic in the world. He texted her that dad had arrived. Mum would see the message in a window next to the window in which she saw her student. Mum was the queen of multitasking. He stayed on the balcony to look at the stars. Khaled’s favorite story genre is scifi. That saved him. His texts were being read. The bomb dropped. Khaled was slingered from the balcony. His entire family was dead. As were 29 neighbours and passersby. Khaled landed on bags of trash and survived. What rescue workers named the ‘greatest luck’ Khaled sees as the unluckiest moment of his life. There was not much left of his family to bury. After transfer to a hospital to check for internal bleeding he got put on a truck and sent south. Khaled did not attend even one funeral after losing both parents, two younger brothers and one younger sister. He never got to see his bombed out home. Never got a chance to pick up even one small item that perhaps had survived the bombing. Now he does this weird thing. He asks people who have also lost something for one small, cheap item of the person they have lost. He has a whole wheelbarrow full of those items. A toy purse. A pacifier. A plastic necklace. Shoe laces. A pack of paper tissues with characteres of the children’s movie Frozen printed on them. A sock. A broken pair of glasses. A business card. An empty make-up kit. Three half-smoked cigars. A pillow case. Three blankets. Five school books titled ‘my first letters’. One tea pot. When Khaled arrives in a new area he sets up his tent. Sets up his altar. A wooden plank supported by stacks of books. People usually catch on without much explanation. They just sense what the items represents. Some fall on their knees and beat their chests. Some hug Khaled. Many pray. All leave the boy something to eat or drink, even the poorest of them all. Khaled sits in front of the altar for hours a day. He repeats his mantra: ‘Everybody was someone.’ ‘Everybody was someone.’ ‘Everybody was someone.’

SO FUCKING RACIST! Not only did they call the police, but his team refunded his money and kicked them off the team. 🚨🚨🚨Yes, a 3-year-old soccer player named Nevada was removed from his youth league, and his family received a refund after police were called to the field. What Happened •The Incident: Nevada was playing in an i9 Sports youth soccer league in Winter Park, Florida. At 3 years old, he was playing in a division against children around 5 years old. • •The Complaints: Opposing parents complained that Nevada was dominating possession, keeping the ball too long, and scoring multiple goals (reportedly scoring up to 10 in a game) because the older children could not take the ball away from him. Some parents accused the toddler of "trying to put on a show". • •Police Involvement: The league issued a trespass notice against the family, and police officers arrived to escort Nevada and his parents away from the field in front of the other children and spectators. • •The Aftermath: The family was removed from the program and received a full refund for their Fall 2026 registration, sharing footage of the incident on social media where it went viral

That story about Google killing hundreds of thousands of trees in Finland for its data center project is such a perfect microcosm of what capitalism is doing to our world. Recent mass media headlines are saying the tech giant "illegally" cut down "250,000" trees, but both claims paint an inaccurate picture of what actually happened. Google killed 400,000 trees (250,000 near a town called Muhos and another 150,000 near the village of Otanmäki), and unless the company's executives actually wind up going to prison for this, their actions cannot properly be described as "illegal". I don't know who first coined the saying "If the penalty is a fine, then it's legal for rich people," but it certainly applies here. The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority has reportedly ordered Google to suspend all “measures that significantly change the environment," saying it will "consider enforcement proceedings and fines" if the megacorporation does not comply. Google's parent company Alphabet has a net worth of around four trillion dollars. Whatever paltry penalties Finland might impose for these ecocidal actions, it won't have any meaningful effect on Google. Giant corporations do this shit all the time. They calculate that the fines incurred by their abusive actions will be dwarfed by the massive profits they generate, issue fake apologies as needed, and leave it to their armies of lawyers to minimize the damage. That's why the Sackler family is still worth billions despite all the fines Purdue Pharma was slapped with while creating the US opiate epidemic. A 2017 Harvard study titled “The Opioid Epidemic: Fixing a Broken Pharmaceutical Market" contains the following paragraph: "Although civil claims and criminal charges were brought against Purdue and its executives, the resulting penalties paled in comparison to extended-release oxycodone profits. In May 2007, the company and its president, chief counsel, and former chief medical officer pled guilty to falsely marketing extended-release oxycodone as 'less addictive, less subject to abuse and diversion, and less likely to cause tolerance and withdrawal than other pain medications.' As part of the plea bargain, Purdue agreed to pay the federal government $600 million and 27 states $20 million. The three executives agreed to $34.5 million in fines but avoided jailtime. By contrast, Purdue has earned an estimated $31 billion in total revenues from extended-release oxycodone since its launch. Rather than deterring fraudulent marketing, the penalties simply became a cost of doing business." A cost of doing business. That's how things work under capitalism. The law primarily exists not to protect people or the environment, but to protect the interests of capital. If you destroyed a Google data center you'd probably be charged as a terrorist and spend decades in prison, but Google can destroy the natural world around you and get off with a finger wag and a symbolic fine. If you stole millions of dollars from your employer you'd go to prison for grand larceny, but if your employer steals millions from its employees you need to win a class action lawsuit to get back what they stole from you. Proponents of capitalism often pretend they support minimal government intervention in civilian affairs, but their entire model is at all times propped up by state power using force to protect the haves from the have-nots at every level of our society. Corporations are free to destroy the environment, destroy your health, rob you, exploit you, and manipulate your government to their advantage, and if you ever take action to stand up to this world-devouring onslaught, the state will lock you in a cage. In school we are taught that that the law exists to protect ordinary people from bad people, but that's not true at all. Under capitalism, the law exists to protect the very worst among us from everyone else. That's why we are seeing our planet being turned into dust and ashes for no reason other than shareholder profit. It's an insane system, and it needs to end. These freaks are feeding our entire biosphere into the woodchipper.

Don't "fine" Google. Instead - arrest, convict, and imprison every Google executive responsible. They can't keep getting away with this kind of evil.
Google did this to build a data center in Finland. It was illegal, but they did it anyway. Big Tech is out of control.

BBC BROKE EQUALITY LAW AND GOT CAUGHT Carrie Gracie spent 30 years at the @BBC. She spoke fluent Mandarin. She ran the Beijing bureau. She was one of four international editors, two men and two women. Then in 2017 the BBC was forced to publish salary data. Gracie looked at what her male equivalent, the North America editor, was earning. He was on nearly double her salary. She had explicitly said equal pay was a condition of taking the China role. The BBC agreed. Then quietly paid her far less anyway. She asked for equal pay. The BBC offered her a raise that still left her below the men. She turned it down. She resigned from the China post in January 2018 and published an open letter telling the licence fee public exactly what their broadcaster was doing. The BBC then put her through nearly a year of an internal grievance process that went nowhere. It took three meetings with the Director-General and the threat of an employment tribunal before she got a public apology and the backdated pay owed to her. The total came to £361,000. She donated every penny to the Fawcett Society (@fawcettsociety), the gender equality charity. She said the fight was about principle, not the payout. A publicly funded institution, legally obligated to follow equality law, paid women less than men in identical roles, got caught, dragged it out for a year, and only coughed up under threat of a tribunal. That is not a pay oversight. That is a policy. Gracie did not ask for a favour. She asked for what she was owed. The BBC made her fight for it like it was a privilege.
