how a live shard stays honest.
one transaction. atomic execution. then the round closes. around 600ms. true finality around 200ms. that part people already feel.
the part that matters more: no node is trusting a screenshot from another node. over 3200 validators, many on low spec machines, recompute. they check signatures. they check roothashes. they walk their own trie. if the data does not match, the block does not fly.
sharding is not a marketing word there. it is how you keep that check cheap enough that ordinary hardware can still do it, while the metachain notarises what the shards agreed.
Why does this matter when AI can rewrite huge codebases overnight? Because the chain still needs a base that any node can verify without asking permission. public code. public state. any LLM can verify the rules. the humans and the agents both consume the same truth.
We probably still need better private / confidential transactions. and better base dApps. that is the reality.
but the verification layer is gud.

Mainnet is back online. And the work continues.
These have been difficult days for the MultiversX community. We are deeply grateful to the engineers, validators and ecosystem partners who worked through the recovery, and to everyone who supported them with patience, encouragement and belief.
Restoring network activity was the immediate priority. The next steps are to complete the assessment, explain what happened and put the findings into practice.
The Foundation is committed to supporting that follow-through, working alongside core contributors, validators and ecosystem partners. The forthcoming technical incident report will detail the incident, how the recovery was carried out and the measures taken to address the issue. Its findings will inform further improvements.
The dedication shown throughout this response gives us confidence in the people building MultiversX. We are proud to work alongside this community and determined to carry that commitment forward.

the chain is back.
it was a force major, an exploited vm endpoint with the combination of a built in function. vm though built in function is atomic and it was not. technically both of them were written by me, audited multiple times, formally verified too.
the exploit was in a code which entered in the mainnet at barnard release. we run import db since that release and no other exploits were recorded. the exploiting wasm contract was purposefully built for this, writing directly wasm, not using the mvx SDKs.
what we did actually to restore the chain?
we made a hardfork, technically restarting the chain with the new code from a moment before the hack. in this way, no tokens were minted, the hack simply did not happen from the perspective of the chain's history.
all the processes are slowly being restarted, we are monitoring all the dapps, safeprice and until now, everything seems fine.
we made this hardfork code without any blacklist / whitelist / centralisation aspect. all the coordination with validators was in the telegram channel, and everyone supported it. exchanges too, they support this hardfork.
these were a couple of super hard days.

Mainnet is back online.
All-clear for normal network activity.
The recovery upgrade has been deployed successfully, block production has resumed, and engineering has completed the recovery checks. You can resume using the network.
Exchange availability may differ. Trading, deposits and withdrawals may remain paused at some exchanges for a few more days while they complete their own reopening processes. Please check your exchange’s official updates before using these services.
We will continue monitoring the network and coordinating with our partners. A full technical incident report will explain what happened, how the recovery was carried out and the measures taken to address the issue.
We know this disruption and the wait have been difficult. Thank you to our community for your patience, your support and your belief in what we’re building together.
To the engineers, validators and partners who worked side by side to bring the network back online: thank you for your dedication.
We move forward together. We continue to build.
Update:
Mainnet restart upgrade v2.1.5.0 is now available. Validators are upgrading and synchronizing their nodes ahead of the coordinated restart.
Engineering’s review of yesterday’s logs confirmed that the recovery hard fork completed successfully, including Shard 1 blocks being confirmed by the metachain. However, Shard 1 did not have sufficient consensus votes to sustain block production. The recovery hard fork does not need to be repeated. This clarifies our initial assessment of yesterday’s attempt.
The new release improves synchronization for nodes still catching up. Today’s preparation window gives validators more time to bring their nodes online and synchronize, with the focus on establishing sufficient validator readiness across every shard.
We currently estimate that Mainnet will resume block production at approximately 15:30 UTC today, Thursday, September 24, subject to validator readiness and successful completion of the restart.
A separate all-clear will be issued for users. Until then, please do not submit or rebroadcast transactions, or use EGLD and ESDT deposit and withdrawal routes through exchanges or bridges.
We know yesterday’s setback made an already difficult wait harder. Thank you for your continued patience, and to the validators and partners working alongside us to bring the network back online.
