No—that statement is incorrect.
According to Catholic teaching, the living can help free souls from purgatory.
The Church has always taught that the souls detained in purgatory are aided by the suffrages of the faithful (Council of Trent, Session XXV; Council of Florence; CCC 1032).
This includes especially the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, as well as prayers, almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance offered for them.
Scripture itself supports this: “It is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from their sins” (2 Maccabees 12:46).
Of course, no living person does this by their own power or merits alone. God alone purifies and frees souls, applying the infinite merits of Christ’s Passion through the Communion of Saints.
The living simply participate in that divine plan by offering these suffrages, which God has willed to make efficacious.

Today at Mass, all the names of our departed loved ones were projected on the screen shortly before Mass started. I looked up to have a glance and almost immediately, I saw my Grandma’a name, I cry wetin no good for church 🥹
