I was a voracious & nondiscriminate reader as a child, so this type of gendered bias is bizarre to me. Maybe it was due to being socialized with girl cousins, but by 5th grade I loved Hatchet, Boxcar Children, Poppy, Sarah, Plain and Tall, Chronicles of Narnia, Maus, & Animorphs

The first novel I ever loved was the survival classic Hatchet, but recently I’ve learned that a *lot* of women despise this book, and see it is as something they were forced to read in school to entice the idiot illiterate boys in their English class. I dove into that tension!
