Toni Morrison has a short essay called "Racism and Fascism," which was an excerpt from a longer speech she gave at Howard University in 1995. I'm sure some people have seen it before, but it might be worth revisiting in light of the news. I'm pasting a section of it below. 🧵

Morrison: 7/ 8. Criminalize the enemy. Then prepare, budget for, and rationalize the building of holding arenas for the enemy—especially its males and absolutely its children. 9. Reward mindlessness and apathy with monumentalized entertainments and with little pleasures...

Morrison: 8/ ... a few minutes on television, a few lines in the press; a little pseudo-success; the illusion of power and influence; a little fun, a little style, a little consequence. 10. Maintain, at all costs, silence.

Here's what I had to say about this fine collection: "'Confronting Climate Coloniality: Decolonizing Pathways for Climate Justice', is an indispensable addition to the fast-growing literature on the many and varied connections between colonialism and the current planetary crisis."
Confronting Climate Coloniality exposes how legacies of colonialism, imperialism, and capitalism co-produce and exacerbate the climate crisis, create disproportionate impacts on those who contributed the least to climate change, and influence global and local responses! @SOAS

Congrats to Acemoglu/Johnson/Robinson for their Nobel. Their work on how colonial regimes focused on resource extraction inflicted long-term damage was clever and important. Also of some current relevance, but I’ll save that for another post.

Wanted to give a shout-out to Matthew Cheney @melikhovo, whose long-running Mumpsimus blog has some real gems. I was looking for a list of recommended / important essays by Virginia Woolf sorted chronologically, and he has the best one online: mumpsimus.blogspot.com/2017/…
