Minnesota's head coach just launched himself into a mob of his own players at full sprint. P.J. Fleck crowd-surfs after every win, today's was his 100th, and the mania took 15 years to build. It started with the worst thing that can happen to a person. In February 2011, Fleck's infant son Colt died of a heart condition. Fleck was a 30-year-old receivers coach at the time. He came up with a phrase to get himself out of bed. Row the boat. Your back faces the future, you can't see what's coming, all you control is the oar. Two years later Western Michigan made him the youngest head coach in the FBS. He went 1-11 his first season and people laughed at the boat stuff. By 2016 the same program went 13-0 and made the Cotton Bowl. When Minnesota hired him away in 2017, there was a catch. Western Michigan had trademarked "Row the Boat." The school owned the legal rights to the phrase he created for his son. Fleck paid them $50,000 out of his own pocket, structured as a scholarship for a walk-on player, to take the words with him. Nine years of rowing later, today happened. Minnesota beat #24 Michigan 20-14, took back the Little Brown Jug for the first time since 2014, and beat them at home for the first time in 49 years. 51,012 fans stormed the field. So yes, the man flies into that pile looking slightly unhinged. He knows better than anyone in that locker room that you don't get to choose which days are the good ones. You just keep rowing until one shows up.
Minnesota beat Michigan earlier today, and this might the best postgame locker room video I've ever seen 😲😲

PJ Fleck was asked after the game how he's able shut out the haters and continue being himself despite the heat he takes publicly. His message, per usual, is worth a listen no matter what you think of the Minnesota Gophers' head coach. "We will never ever, ever, ever take winning for granted... I don't think there's any reason for anybody in this world, no matter who you are, to apologize for who you are. As long as you are being the best, most authentic, most real version of yourself every day, and you're changing your best, and you're doing good in the world. You do that, don't you ever change... Be yourself."

When people ask me what’s changed in the past 10 years in football (see below) It takes what it takes. Notice those 3 up front, they are still playing.

“Administrations win championships. Coaches win games… if you’re not totally into it and they’re not committed, you’re not winning. You just can’t.” True at the high school level as well… teapaw.org/slancehoops/status/203…

I played for Nick Saban, Bill Belichick, and Sean Payton. I studied under some of the greatest coaching minds in the history of professional football. And after the Lord saved me, I realized something that changed everything. Every single leadership principle that made those teams thrive is biblical. They just did it for the glory of man instead of the glory of God. Here is what I mean. Belichick taught us to do our jobs. Scripture commands us to work as unto the Lord, not for the approval of men. (Col. 3:23) Belichick held Tom Brady to a higher standard than anyone else. Scripture says to whom much is given, much is required. (Luke 12:48) Belichick cut the cancer immediately, no matter the cost. Scripture tells us that a little leaven leavens the whole lump. (Gal. 5:9) Belichick sacrificed personal credit and took responsibility for every loss. Scripture calls leaders to be servants first. (Matthew 20:26) Brady sacrificed personal stats for the good of the team. Scripture says do nothing out of selfish ambition, but in humility consider others above yourself. (Phil. 2:3) Brady could encourage a teammate and confront him in the same breath. Scripture says speak the truth in love. (Eph. 4:15) These men did not know they were pulling from eternal, biblical commands. But the principles worked. They always work. Because truth is truth whether the man wielding it knows its source or not. Now imagine this. If these principles built a two-decade dynasty in professional football with men who did not know the Lord, what would God do through His church if we humbled ourselves and followed the same playbook? What would happen in your marriage if you coached yourself harder than you coach anyone else? What would happen in your home if you cut the cancers of laziness, passivity, and selfishness? What would happen in your leadership if you stopped protecting your ego and started serving your team? The blueprint is not new. The playbook has been written for two thousand years. The question is whether you are willing to run it. I spent 10 years in the NFL and the best locker rooms I ever walked into operated on principles that Scripture laid out long before football existed. Stop looking for a new framework. Open the Book. And do your job.

Billy Madison was released 31 years ago. The infamous trivia decathlon was almost cut for being too absurd. Test audiences loved it. The studio realized the movie worked best when it leaned fully into stupidity instead of trying to ground itself.

I’ve coached high school football for 33 years. I’ve coached teams that have gone 0-10 and teams with that have gone 10-0. I’ve played for championships and I’ve prayed for first downs. I’ve lost my cool and I’ve been steady under pressure. I’ve called some amazing games and I’ve lost games due to foolish decisions. I’ve laughed and I’ve cried. What’s remand consistent is the kids. 14-18 years of age that needed a steady voice, someone to believe in them. A leader and a mentor that would bring the best out of them. Lets keep that in mind as we scheme and dream about next season. It’s all about building champions. One conversation, one practice, one season one life at the time.

JV football is the last pure bastion of football in America. No championships. No prestige. No news reels. Just going out with your brothers and sisters, learning, playing, and loving the game the way it was intended. #jvplaybook
