Part of me wants to hc that Severian got into smoking cuz he saw Bringer do it after a mission and wanted to impress him by being “tough” too and the habit just stuck with him as he aged but that’s far to cruel.

I mean is it not an inherently sweet pairing to find someone who despite behind the exact opposite of you in every way can somewhat understand and relate to your struggles? Of seeing things you never should have.
