Literacy isn't just a heart issue. It's a pocketbook issue.
Some people are moved by heartstrings. Everyone is moved by their pocketbook. 💵
Here's what years of literacy advocacy have taught me: reading isn't just an education issue. It's an economic issue. A workforce issue. A national competitiveness issue.
And it affects every American, every single day.
Right now, only about 1 in 3 of our students in 4th, 8th, and 12th grade read proficiently.
How do we compete with China when two-thirds of our kids can't read at grade level?
We don't.
Here's the hopeful part: as Dr. @LouisaMoats points out, research suggests about 95% of children can learn to read with evidence-based instruction.
95%.
Imagine where the United States would be today if we'd delivered on that.
Every child who learns to read becomes a stronger worker, a better-informed citizen, and a more secure family. Their success is our success.
It's in ALL of our interest that children learn to read. 📚

This could be good news for Atlanta's future urbanism -- the years-long effort to revise the city's zoning is being paused until 2027 because of red flags about the zoning rewrite not going far enough to allow new density in neighborhoods.

Do you know the names of your K-2 students who have missed 10+ days of school this year? Students who miss fewer that 10+ days per year of schooling in K-2 are significantly less likely to read on grade level by grade three. What are you doing differently to help these students?

Dear board member. Nobody is forcing you to continue funding programs with no proof of working? Youre not a hostage.
They need goals. If the results of any program don't add up, consider reallocating the money towards things that actually work. 🤯
@Parents4RJ sound familiar?

In 2014, the @NAACP passed a national resolution on dyslexia.
They called it the civil rights issue of our time.
They were right.
🙏 Thank you, @voiceadvocacy — for the resolution that started it.
A decade later, resolutions on evidence-based literacy instruction are moving forward across the country — and it's worth remembering how we got here.
Not top-down. Bottom-up.
It started with dyslexic students and parents who refused to accept "wait and see."
Here's the thing: what works for dyslexic kids works for all kids.
@OHEducation Director Steve Dackin put it perfectly — sometimes the education system needs "external stimuli" to break out of old practice.
We're happy to be that stimuli. 🔥
Parents advocating for their own kid is powerful.
Parents advocating for every kid?
That's how movements are built.
