The flush toilets in my public school worked. So did the heat & fire alarm. It's not the case for AK rural schools & despite reliance on state $$$, AK lawmakers this weekend failed to restore nearly $28M in maintenance & construction dollars vetoed in June propublica.org/article/alask…

Seeing the news and thinking of the first words William Harlan Hale intoned on the VOA into occupied Europe, 1942: “Today, and daily from now on, we shall speak to you about America and the war. The news may be good for us. The news may be bad. But we shall tell you the truth.”

This NPR story, with local reporting from around the country, including from me in Seattle, paints a picture of the haphazard downsizing if not dismantling of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. buff.ly/FHd0MIy

I spent the last year crawling around in Alaska’s rural public schools. What I found is a public health and safety crisis and the state’s Indigenous students are likely to feel the greatest impact.

(1/4) Recent layoffs of federal workers has a disproportionate impact on Native Americans, but is receiving almost no media attention. In Indian Health Services, which provides healthcare to 2.8 mil NAs, 2,200 people were laid off, including 1,400 who provide direct patient care.
Hot tips for radio editors: I'm a radio reporter. Please stop editing out all my audio engineering notes, my formatted tape cuts and for the love of PETE, stop creating a new file of the script with every edit. Google Drive is already unnavigable. Thx for coming to my ted talk.
We have no meaningful SAR operations in the American #Arctic. We don't have an active icebreaker in the region. There's no major law enforcement presence, we haven't ratified UNCLOS. The list is long for why it's unreasonable to think we'd be able to take this on.
A treasure hunt in Newtok highlights residents' efforts to cary their history forward to a new village site at Mertarvik: kyuk.org/arts-culture-commun… (the listen is better than the read. Radio first, always!)

Election results i can get behind. Congratulations to friends and peers in Alaska who did the hard work of making hard work better and more equitable for themselves.
We did it! A majority of @adndotcom newsroom staff voted to unionize. The @nlrbgov counted our ballots today via Zoom after receiving a few mail-in ballots.
This makes the ADN the only unionized newsroom in Alaska. Thank you for your support! #ADNunited
