I appreciated the opportunity today to meet @emmaheming, wife of actor Bruce Willis, as she came to the Capitol to advocate for Senate Bill 1047, which would require the state to collect data on diagnoses frontotemporal degeneration. FTD is the most common dementia for people under age 60 and represents a group of progressive brain disorders that affect areas of the brain responsible for personality, behavior, language, and motor skills.
Bruce Willis suffered from aphasia early in his illness, while mine came on suddenly after a stroke, but we both have lived through variations on this communication challenge. I appreciate her advocacy for closer study of brain health, and thanks to @senrogerniello for carrying this important bill.

A heartfelt thank you to @SenRogerNiello for authoring SB 1047, which would add Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD) to California's Neurodegenerative Disease Registry. I am honored to add my name as a Co-Author to this important piece of legislation.Hugh thanks to @EmmaHeming Willis for being such a staunch and visible advocate for all those suffering from FTD.
Collecting this critical data will help advance research, improve our understanding of FTD, and bring us closer to better treatments and ultimately, a cure for this devastating and fatal disease.

“Advocate for your person and for yourself”: Emma Heming Willis says she felt hopeless after her husband, beloved actor Bruce Willis, was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.
Throughout her caregiving journey, she says she’s learned to ask for help and prioritize her own health — and she is sharing “actionable, tangible” ideas for other caregivers in her new book, “The Unexpected Journey,” which she calls a roadmap for people caring for loved ones with dementia.
