I don’t know what happened with Russell Brand. He denies criminality.
But I DO understand why women might not report rape to the police
My take on tonight’s #PoliticsHub 👇
Sadly the process of reporting and police investigation often worsens the trauma for the victim. We need more police on this.
1 in 4 women in the UK have been raped or sexually assaulted since the age of 16
6 in 7 rapes against women in the UK are carried out by someone they know
5 in 6 women who are raped in the UK don’t report it to the police
Fewer than 3 in 100 rapes recorded by UK police in 2024 resulted in someone being charged that same year
It is an abhorrent crime committed by cowards. Every perpetrator put in prison is a blessing.
No victim of sexual assault should have to endure what this country's justice system requires. Three year police investigations? Scrutiny in court? Shout out to the brave victims of Brand who stood up to him and overcame those obstacles. #RussellBrandtrial
Sadly, police aren't equipped to deal with the volume of sexual assault investigations. And the chances of conviction remain very slim. In the event of a case making it to court, giving evidence and being scrutinised is not something every victim can bear. #RussellBrandtrial
Sadly the police aren't equipped to deal with the sheer volume of investigations as it is. And the chances of conviction remain very slim. Many victims will be hindering whatever recovery they can hope for by reporting to the police.

Justice! And an important message. Women have been abused since forever in the name of 'boys will be boys'. I bring my daughters up teaching them to not be vulnerable to predators. It's time all boys were raised to respect boundaries! #RussellBrandtrial
Russell Brand has been found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault.
The judge has said he will receive a prison sentence at his hearing on Monday.

Brand’s defence is a classic case of “top shagger but nice guy who gaslights his victims into believing nothing bad happened” will guarantee to make every woman who has been sexually assaulted burn with anger because this is exactly what we’ve been talking about for CENTURIES.
Actually a very clever tactic giving out his email address. Like saying 'see, i didn't rape you'
Everyone should have a legal defence. But you'll not be able to feel clean after you read Ian Winter KC, Brand's barrister, on his defence, such as: 'Rapists don't give out their email address.' It's sick, perhaps the worst closing speech I've read. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwkg…
As a society we are more savvy about the realities of sexual assault. Anyone could assume Brand was manipulative, powerful and pretty terrifying. If this is the defence's best efforts, he's going down.
Russell Brand’s lawyer said in his closing statement that none of the complainants “resisted or screamed or even tried to leave”.
He also said that the fifth woman, who alleged she had been anally raped, “didn’t roll over, or kick out, or try to stop him in any way from penetrating her anus”.
I've heard many survivors say that they froze.

Here’s a story for you. We started filming without owning the title and had to do alternates.
Taft Broadcasting owned the title Ghostbusters as part of their half-hour sitcom starring Larry Storch and Forrest Tucker (F-Troop) and a gorilla chasing ghosts. I had never heard of it. They didn’t have proton packs or Bill Murray. Columbia paid $500,000 to buy the name, but they really should have paid Dean Martin, from whom I first heard the term.
In the film Scared Stiff (1953), he and Jerry Lewis (check out his acrobatic stair descent) are in an old haunted castle, and Lizabeth Scott asks Dean: “Who are you guys?” And Dean answers: “You’ve heard of Trustbusters and Gangbusters, we’re Ghostbusters!”
For my research writing the first movie, I watched every single ‘ghost’ comedy ever made. Bowery Boys, Hope and Crosby, Abbot and Costello, Martin and Lewis all did such films.
Happy Halloween 2026.

Ollie: Didn't you once tell me that you had an uncle?
Stan: Sure I've got an uncle. Why?
Ollie: Now we're getting somewhere. Is he living?
Stan: No. He fell through a trap door and broke his neck
Ollie: Was he building a house?
Stanley: 'No, they were hanging him.
