An observation: I have never understood why courts decided “characters” should be protected by copyright rather than trademark. The latter makes so much more sense.

Aaron Swartz would have been 36 today. Aaron committed suicide after being sentenced to 35 years in prison by US authorities for transferring and sharing scientific articles from JSTOR.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Swartz was never convicted or sentenced to prison. After declining a plea bargain in which he'd serve six months in jail, he committed suicide before trial. forbes.com/sites/timothyl…

Microsoft responds to the German Federal DPA's conclusion that O365 breaches GDPR (English translation linked at the bottom) Says little about the data flows issue. Just points to its EU Data Boundary product that doesn't solve the problem. What a mess. news.microsoft.com/de-de/mic…

I downloaded my @Twitter data (eventually), and used tools created by @podehaye to look at how advertisers targeted me on the platform — and what types of information they had on me. You can do it too, (here digipower.academy/) Here's what I found: <<cue thread>>

This is the most ridiculous read of the situation. This is not “FTC trying to murder a foundation of the economy.” It’s “advertisers went all in on a predatory, exploitative system and they’re getting called on it.”

A Clearview AI lawyer testified in front of UK parliament today and confirmed what our team at BuzzFeed News reported a year ago: the company has been hawking its facial recognition tech to countries with questionable human rights records like the UAE. teapaw.org/sgclark92/status/15946…

Clearview has no customers in the UK or EU, Mulcaire says. Most in the US, but also: Panama, Brazil, Mexico, Dominican Republic and Dubai.

This tweet is getting a bunch of RTs again for some reason so I also wanted to point folks to the sequel, for more books. 🥰 teapaw.org/cfiesler/status/153537…
Since my stack of books has gotten so much bigger: reading recommendations on tech ethics and justice, the sequel.

Well, before they fold, at least they were able to give LADOT a real-time location data feed of all their rides (data that is now being used by the startup behind the program to sell surveillance to other cities).

Red Bull has never had a 1-2 in the drivers championship. That’s now their stated aim. His refusal to help them in that desire yesterday showed petulance and a sad and selfish short sighted spitefulness. He’s not the complete racer yet. Nor the talisman they need. Much to learn.
