A little bit of commerce on the new bitcoin called carbon credits. There is an organization called Verra which has set itself as the ultimate standard for carbon credit verification and issuance. According to the organization, Verra's certification programs include Verified Carbon Standard Program and REDD,Climate & Community Biodiversity Standards Program, Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard Program, and the Plastic & Waste Reduction Program. The more your carbon credits are verified and issued by Verra the higher the chances of you selling them at a premium. For polluting companies, a reputation face-lift is guaranteed through purchase of Verra verified carbon credits. Verra has got a fee structure which is as below : 1. Account opening fee = US$500 2. Account Maintenance Fee = US$500 per year. 3. Pipeline Listing Request Fee = US$1000 for each request. 4. Project Registration Request Review Fee =US$2500 for each project registration request. 5. VCU (Verified Carbon Unit) issuance levy including Greenhouse Gas Emissions credits from approved GHG programs = US$0.20 per VCU A metric tonne( 1000kgs) of carbon credits at the markets ranges between $40 and $80 , prices change depending on demand and supply. There is no law that forces carbon buyers to keep the carbon credits, they can resell them at the carbon credits market. For example, a company that purchases carbon credits worth US$1 000 000 to retain its right to pollute can resell them at double the price if demand allows. You can now imagine the amount of money that exchanged hands this year in Kenya when The Regional Voluntary Carbon Market Company held an auction in Nairobi where a total of Verra registered 2.2 million tonnes of carbon credits were sold with companies like Saudi Aramco and Neom City being the biggest buyers. The auction clearing price(lowest successful bid) was US$6.27. The bulk of carbon credits sold were from projects undertaken in Kenya, South Africa, Morocco,Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, and Egypt. You now have an idea of how much Blue Carbon from Dubai stands to make from the millions of hectares of forests it has secured from Liberia,Tanzania,Zimbabwe,Zambia, Angola, and Kenya. Do not be misled by the millions of dollars of investment funds they through around when grabbing African land for their carbon offset programs. That money goes back to them and at most funds their operations while Africans get wages for planting trees and other menial roles. The other money goes to politicians as bribes for signing off on carbon offset deals. The companies get to recoup those funds through the sale of carbon credits.
