Replying to @FacultyBerkeley
@FacultyBerkeley @uc_faculty @ucftp in the midst of a COVID surge when @CAPublicHealth is urging ppl to wear masks, faculty should be leading by example & making sure vulnerable students know they have the right to protect themselves & one another.
Campus-mandated mask bans are fucking ableist & fascist For more on mask bans and how this will impact students, staff & faculty at @UofCalifornia and elsewhere: teenvogue.com/story/mask-ban…

“if high risk be safe” shows how out of touch people are. If the DNC listened to high risk & disabled people they would implement mitigations like a mask mandate It is increasingly impossible to stay safe when there is such hostility towards people who mask in public
I’m currently going through COVID after the DNC. For a claim the DNC didn’t care: everyone attending knew the risk & increase in cases. We’re at risk every day. The good news? Dems get vaccinated & boosted. There’s a level of herd immunity. If high risk, be safe. Get vaccinated.

Americans with disabilities still face obstacle after obstacle just for trying to be themselves. As we mark #InternationalDisabilityDay, we should all resolve to center disability rights and call out unfair treatment when we see it. #IDPWD2023

Disabled people are 25% of the population. Discrimination against disabled people is not an oversight. Inaccessibility is a choice. Lack of accommodation is a choice. Lack of diversity is a choice. Ableism is a choice.

Instead of #DisabilityPrideMonth, how about #DisabilityPrecarityMonth where we organize and fight like hell? Pride is complicated and flattens out a lot of the joy, love, and care that is intertwined with pain, systemic ableism, and trauma

It’s been a wild 12 months since I went to the ICU. So much has changed. It’s never easy to ask for help or donations but if if you have the means please give or share this post. Thank you!

The assumption that disabled people have special needs is a direct result of the devaluation of disabled people and disabled lives. A special need is a burden. A human need is not. Ableism is a house of cards relying on faulty assumptions about disabled people.

“Things are so much better for disabled people now than they used to be. You should feel lucky and grateful.” Any gains that disabled people have made are not a matter of luck. Don’t ask disabled people to be grateful for the bias that persists in every aspect of life.

Hospital worker to me, a disabled person: “Do you have a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order?” Me: “No.” Hospital: “Do you want one? Me: “No.” Hospital: “Are you sure?” Me: “Very sure.” Hospital: “You can always change your mind.” Would a nondisabled person be treated this way?

Stranger on street to me a wheelchair user: “Repent, have faith and you will be forgiven. Repent and you will walk again.” Disability is not faithlessness. Disability is not sinfulness.

When Alice Wong (@SFdirewolf) was in high school, her teacher barred her from a more advanced drama class because of her disability. This week, Alice reflects how that moment got her “in touch with [her] rage.” Listen here: bit.ly/3DiUuAU

Someone just referred to me as ‘alternatively abled.” Nondisabled people will go to extraordinary lengths to avoid using the term “disabled.” Euphemisms for “disabled” are ableism.
