Millions of American households have their electricity shut off because of unpaid bills each year.
A lack of air conditioning during extremely hot temperatures “can lead to a variety of mental and physical health consequences,” Sanya Carley, a professor of energy policy and city planning at the University of Pennsylvania, told PBS News Weekend’s John Yang.
Separately, lacking access to energy and electricity has other impacts, Carley said. For instance, no electricity means an inability to charge a cellphone or run a refrigerator.
Carley shares how Americans struggling to pay their electricity or other energy bills can seek help or take preventative measures.
