Interesting data centre numbers in @AEMO_Energy's ESOO this week. Data centres consumed 5 TWh of electricity in FY 2026 in Australia's main grid. This is ~3% of operational consumption. This is expected to triple to 15 TWh by FY 2030 and 7X to 34 TWh (13% of grid) by FY 2036.

NSW Government recently released the NSW Data Centre Guidelines, which set out what the state expects from data centre developments. The Guidelines also promise a faster, more predictable path through the planning application process. If you are developing data centres in NSW, here are the five energy tests to understand: 1. Renewable PPA's & Firming Agreements 🧵

4. Grid Location Locate your data centre in parts of the grid with spare capacity, including renewable energy zones and former coal generation sites. Otherwise, network upgrade costs could be significant. 5. Energy Forecasting Have maximum and average energy usage figures ready, alongside utility-spec smart energy meters.

Australian Government has finalised the successful bids for #CapacityInvestmentScheme Tender 8 – NEM Dispatchable, with 15 standalone battery projects selected. Together, the successful projects will provide 4.2 GW / 16.1 GWh of dispatchable capacity. The tender received 73 bids totalling 76.4 GWh, reflecting strong participation from battery storage developers across the NEM. You can comprehensively track battery and renewable energy projects across the NEM including which ones have won CIS, LTESA and REZ access rights tenders, through the Energy Synapse Platform. 👉 Request a demo today: mailchi.mp/f2c9a94813b2/ener…

AEMO has released the final 2026 Integrated System Plan (ISP)⚡ One of the key updates is the increased outlook for dispatchable storage (utility-scale + co-ordinated CER storage). The final ISP now projects 64 GW of dispatchable storage by 2050, up from 55 GW in the draft 2026 ISP and 49 GW in the 2024 ISP. The updated forecast reinforces the growing role of batteries in supporting reliability as electricity demand increases and more renewable generation enters the NEM. The ISP also continues to identify renewable energy, supported by transmission, storage and flexible gas, as the least-cost pathway for the energy transition. At Energy Synapse, we're incorporating the final 2026 ISP into our market and revenue modelling and are now taking bookings for utility-scale BESS and hybrid projects. As battery storage becomes increasingly integrated into utility-scale renewable developments, wind projects are beginning to follow a path already well established in solar. Following the discussions at the Australian Wind Industry Forum, our Managing Director @1MarijaPetkovic was quoted in @renew_economy on how developers are increasingly considering battery storage from the earliest stages of wind project development. The article explores: ▶️ Why more wind developers are incorporating batteries into project designs from day one ▶️ How hybrid configurations can improve project economics ▶️ What this trend could mean for the future of wind development in the NEM As battery costs continue to fall and market conditions evolve, wind and battery hybrids may become just as common as solar and battery hybrids. 👉 Read the full article: reneweconomy.com.au/just-as-… #AWIF2026 #BatteryStorage #Wind

Low capture prices are not just a problem for solar farms. Almost every wind farm in the NEM is earning a dispatch weighted average price that is significantly lower than the 24/7 average spot price. Adding battery storage is a savvy way to extract more value from the site.

RWE's 50 MW / 400 MWh Limondale Battery in NSW has received approval to commence full operations. The project is Australia's first operational eight-hour battery, marking an important milestone for long-duration storage in the NEM. For developers, understanding how battery duration influences project economics, operational performance, and commercial arrangements remains an important part of battery project development. 🔍 How we can help The Energy Synapse Platform tracks the operation, economics, and offtakes/underwriting arrangements of every battery in the NEM, helping developers stay informed on project activity and market developments. 👉 Request a demo today: mailchi.mp/f2c9a94813b2/ener…

CIS Tender 9 – NEM Generation is now open for bid submissions. This tender is seeking an indicative target of 5 GW of renewable energy generation across the NEM, with registrations closing on 6 July and bids due on 20 July. NSW projects are ineligible for this tender due to previous CIS allocation outcomes, while solar-only projects in Victoria will be limited to 0.47 GW. As developers prepare bids, understanding revenue performance and outcomes under different market scenarios will remain an important part of assessing project competitiveness. 🔍 How Energy Synapse can help We support developers participating in CIS tenders through independent, data-driven analysis, including revenue modelling under the CISA cap-and-collar framework, price forecasting, scenario analysis, and project configuration optimisation. 👉 energysynapse.com.au/service…
