Michael Jordan is the greatest defensive guard in the history of the game. Anyone who disagrees wasn’t born yet and anyone who saw him play D but disagrees doesn’t know ball. Argue with a wall.

Jordan scored 1,576 more playoff points than Pippen across those six Finals runs.
That’s not some marginal difference.
That’s an entirely different offensive burden.
And we’re really pretending 189 extra rebounds, 20 assists and 26 steals somehow cancel that out?
Jordan was the scoring champion all six title seasons, the primary offensive engine, the closer, and won all SIX Finals MVPs.
Basketball isn’t a spreadsheet where every category carries equal weight.
Two things are true at the same time:
1. Pippen was phenomenal.
2. Jordan was the reason the dynasty had a ceiling nobody else reached.

Michael Jordan told an 18-year-old Kevin Garnett to guard Scottie Pippen. One bucket later, KG's entire future was about to change.
Garnett recalled the legendary Chicago pickup game that helped convince him to skip college and go straight to the NBA.
KG was still in high school when he found himself sharing the court with Jordan and Pippen. After Jordan assigned him to guard Scottie, Garnett scored, started talking trash, and refused to back down.
“I’m holding my own against one of the greats,” Garnett recalled thinking during the matchup.
But the biggest moment came when Isiah Thomas, who had been watching from the sidelines, approached him with a message that changed everything.
“Boy, you could play in the league right now,” Thomas told him.
Garnett later reflected on just how important that moment was.
“I felt like if that pivotal part of my life doesn’t happen, I don't know if I’m sitting here.”
KG ultimately skipped college and became the fifth overall pick in the 1995 NBA Draft, helping pave the way for future high school stars to make the same jump.

Michael Jordan made the Dunk Contest feel bigger than the Dunk Contest. His appearances were not simply about athletic difficulty or trying to win a trophy. They became part of the construction of the Michael Jordan mystique.
He understood, maybe better than anyone before him, that greatness is not only about what you accomplish. It is also about the images people carry with them. The walk to the other end of the floor. The anticipation before the run. The tongue out. The ball extended. The body seemingly hanging in the air a fraction longer than it should. The free throw line. The silhouette. The shoes. The flight.
Those moments became inseparable from who Michael Jordan was.
The Dunk Contest gave him the perfect stage to turn athleticism into mythology. He made power look graceful. He made competition look cinematic. He made a dunk feel like an event. When Jordan took off, the arena did not simply watch. It held its breath.
That is what made his participation so important. Plenty of players have jumped higher, attempted harder dunks, and created more technically complex finishes. But very few ever created the same sense of occasion. Jordan was not just producing highlights. He was building an identity that would eventually become larger than basketball itself.
Long before the six championships, the six Finals MVPs, and the two three-peats, there was already this image of Michael Jordan suspended in the air while an entire generation looked up.
The Dunk Contest did not just showcase Michael Jordan.
It helped create Air Jordan.
