Not years.
WEEKS.
Over the past 5 days, 3 russian refineries have been completely shut down.
Ten major refineries left.
One a day.
Gasoline production → zero.
russia cannot import 100,000 tonnes of fuel a day.
It doesn’t have the currency.
It doesn’t have the options.
Ukraine holds the switch.
And once the refineries are gone, the war economy runs on fumes.

Putin does not have a veto over European security.
Any agreement to end the war must prevent Russia from re-arming and re-attacking.
This is why earlier this year, I put forward a paper with core demands towards Moscow, which was discussed by EU Foreign Ministers. This should be the basis for any negotiations.
Concessions should be on the aggressor, not on the victim.

🚨 NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte says Ukraine is unlikely to regain all its territory militarily and that peace may require compromise.
But only Ukraine can decide what it is willing to accept.
My question is simple: Why is the country defending its land expected to compromise, while the country that invaded it gets to keep making demands?
If aggression is rewarded with territory, what exactly stops the next invasion?

Russia aims to make Ukraine uninhabitable – and Europe is just watching.
According to Zelenskyy, Russia has attacked Ukraine with 172 drones and 36 ballistic missiles.
The enemy directed all of these missiles at Kyiv and the Kyiv region. The primary target was, once again, energy infrastructure. In the Kyiv region, electrical substations—which connect the Rivne and Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plants to the capital and the central regions of Ukraine—were damaged.

Jared, your talk of “30 years of mistrust” and “competing security concerns” sounds remarkably like something Vladimir Putin would write himself.
Let me remind you what actually happened during those 30 years.
1992: Russian forces intervened in Moldova’s Transnistrian conflict, helping entrench a separatist territory where Russian troops remain.
2008: Russia fought a war against Georgia and consolidated its occupation of Georgian territory.
2014: Russia illegally annexed Crimea and fuelled a war in eastern Ukraine.
2022: Russia launched the largest invasion in Europe since World War II, bringing massacres in Bucha, torture, deportations of civilians, the forced transfer of children and the systematic destruction of Ukrainian communities.
Meanwhile, Russia had already signed the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, promising to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and borders, and the 1997 NATO-Russia Founding Act, committing itself to European security principles.
Europe already had a security architecture, Jared. Russia repeatedly violated it.
Your language deliberately blurs the distinction between an aggressor and its victims. That is precisely how the Kremlin wants this conflict presented.
Russia is a nuclear power. Nobody in Europe is preparing to invade it. Russia’s neighbours, however, have spent decades defending themselves against Russian aggression.
And if you genuinely believe that no country should have a veto over another nation’s alliances, perhaps you should explain that principle to Putin.
Europe does not need another security framework designed around Moscow’s imperial ambitions.
It needs Russia to respect the borders, sovereignty and international agreements it has repeatedly violated.
Stop talking as though Russia and its neighbours are equally responsible for this catastrophe. They are not.

According to FT sources, Putin is threatening to destroy Ukraine's infrastructure by next year: bridges, ports, railways, and power plants.
In this way, the Kremlin is raising the stakes ahead of upcoming negotiations. By threatening total destruction, Putin is trying to force Ukraine and the West to negotiate from a position of weakness and agree to terms of capitulation.
Russia continues its campaign of terror against Ukrainian cities and the destruction of logistics infrastructure to make life in Ukraine's major cities unbearable. Russia hopes to trigger a new wave of refugees, drain the state budget through emergency repairs, and undermine morale.
The threats to completely destroy Ukraine's infrastructure are also a signal to European leaders. Putin is demonstrating that the cost of supporting Ukraine will continue to rise, seeking to divide the Western coalition and force it to put pressure on Kyiv.
This is also an attempt to conceal Russia's own problems. Despite the threats, Russia's territorial advances on the battlefield have nearly stalled in 2026, while Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries and logistics hubs are inflicting serious economic losses on Moscow. The threats are an attempt to regain the initiative.
Putin's threats indicate that he has no military solution on the frontline and is trying to win the war by destroying Ukraine's rear. Responding with panic or concessions would mean playing into his strategy. The only effective response remains to increase the cost of the war for Russia itself.
