Respectfully @TimHoustonNS @NSMentalHealth @nshealth @NSLAE, we have a mental health care crisis in NS. Without more paediatricians, psychiatrists & psychologists with specialized expertise in psychological conditions, events like this will continue to happen. We need to do more.

I listened to an incredible @Amplify podcast episode yesterday with Dr Catherine Snow & learned about this gem of a book that should be a must-read in every teacher training program!!
This book “addresses the identification of groups of children at risk, effective instruction for the preschool and early grades, effective approaches to dialects and bilingualism, the importance of these findings for the professional development of teachers, and gaps that remain in our understanding of how children learn to read.“

My professional focus has always been on helping struggling readers. But it’s abundantly clear that students are struggling in math, too.
This is what I know:
✅students need explicit, systematic instruction in foundational math skills
✅students can’t inquire about things they don’t know
✅a structured approach to math instruction is essential for some but good for all & harms no one
✅the curriculum outlines WHAT students need to know but teachers need evidence-based resources to teach them HOW
✅we need to screen Ss and provide early, targeted interventions to prevent math achievement gaps from growing
✅too many teachers rely on TPT and non-evidence-based activities that do not align with the research (or have to make their own) because they do not have access to evidence-based math programs (especially in French!!)
I’ve turned to @WhatWorksED for literacy research and I’m turning to it again for the math research. @IESResearch #ScienceOfMath
