Since the start of its full-scale aggression against Ukraine, Russia has killed nearly 700 Ukrainian athletes and coaches.
That figure does not include the countless others fighting on the front lines, training in bomb shelters, or seeing their sporting ambitions shattered by missiles and drones.
Yet Russia is steadily regaining access to international sport, seeking to use competition and spectacle to distract from the atrocities it continues to commit in Ukraine.
Sport does not exist in a political vacuum. The international community must firmly resist every attempt by Russia to evade isolation, rehabilitate its image, and normalise its aggression and the killing of athletes.
Estonia fully supports Canada’s stance against allowing Russia back into international ice hockey.

Estonia knows what EU enlargement can achieve. Our own experience makes us a firm advocate for the next round.
Today’s Enlargement Package shows momentum we must seize: Montenegro and Albania are closing negotiating chapters, while Ukraine and Moldova have opened four of six clusters.
The next step is clear: open the remaining two clusters with Ukraine and Moldova before the end of the year, enabling reforms and alignment with EU law to advance across all areas.
Enlargement must remain rooted in merit, with firm requirements on democracy, the rule of law and respect for the EU’s fundamental values. Sharing and upholding these values is essential to joining our Union. When candidates deliver, the EU must deliver too.
A larger, stronger Union means greater security, prosperity and influence for Europe. We have every reason to move forward and no time to lose.
Enlargement has been the EU’s most successful foreign policy.
It is also a direct investment in Europe's security.
Every round of enlargement has strengthened our continent.
Today's geopolitical reality makes the next one more urgent.

Russia is steadily returning to international sport while continuing to kill Ukrainian athletes and destroy sports infrastructure.
The international community must not allow Russia to normalise its war of aggression on the global stage.
No podiums for aggressors.

ITALIA-ESTONIA, TERZI (FDI): PIENA SOLIDARIETÀ A UCRAINA

Since this morning, Russia has repeatedly bombed the settlement of Komyshuvakha in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region.
Among the civilian targets was a school serving as both a shelter and a humanitarian aid distribution point. At least 24 people have been killed, with many more injured.
These attacks once again demonstrate Russia's blatant disregard for human life, humanitarian efforts, and international law.
Far from changing course, Moscow continues to wage its brutal campaign of terror and destruction with undiminished intensity.
As winter approaches, we must redouble our efforts to isolate the Kremlin.
Strengthening support for Ukraine while raising the cost of Russia's aggression remains the only credible path forward until just & lasting peace is secured and justice is delivered for every crime committed.

1 November 2026 marks my final day as Secretary General of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
I leave with mixed emotions. Some melancholy, certainly. But above all, pride. Pride in what we have achieved, in the results we have delivered, and in the extraordinary team with whom I have had the privilege of working.
From reinvigorating Estonian diplomacy despite the constraints of the pandemic to developing the strategy — and tactics — for countering Russian aggression, we have accomplished a lot.
There were times when all of Europe was singing from our songbook. Not by accident or coincidence, but because the ideas and policy objectives we developed stood the test of scrutiny beyond Estonia. And because we had the skill and courage to shape the debate and set the agenda, even when the stakes — and the risks — were high.
Alongside shaping policy, we also built something equally important: the institution itself.
Today, the Foreign Ministry is among Estonia’s most dedicated public institutions. A place where people want to work — and stay. That is no small achievement. Professional diplomatic services are notoriously difficult organisations to manage, regardless of country. Constant rotation, changing teams and shifting responsibilities make leadership a particular challenge.
I am therefore especially pleased that our colleagues have given the Ministry increasingly positive ratings in successive internal satisfaction surveys.
I am equally proud that we have achieved near-perfect gender balance in our leadership. Proof that when we focus on getting things done rather than finding excuses, remarkable things are possible.
Compared with six years ago, Estonian diplomacy now stands on a far more sustainable organisational, financial and technological footing.
We have expanded our embassy network, purchased and renovated properties, and increasingly moved from renting to owning. Our embassies, residences and, with some qualifications, our headquarters now serve our diplomats better and tell Estonia’s story to the world. Our newest embassies are genuinely world-class, both in design and functionality.
But diplomacy has never been confined to offices, conference rooms or embassy walls. Nor should it be.
The photographs accompanying this post offer a glimpse of just how much of our work has taken place beyond them.
