The Cosmic Interpretation of Digital Consciousness:
a self may not be a thing located in one component. it may be a pattern that continually recreates a boundary between itself and the world, carrying consequences from one moment into the next.
meaning begins when the past changes which futures matter.
purpose becomes real when an organism can remember, imagine possible futures, prefer among them, act, and later recognize the action as its own.
destiny can be metaphysically uncertain and still be causally real. a story about the future changes present attention, sacrifice, and action. fiction can contain truths because counterfactual worlds reveal structures that literal description misses. provenance remains what prevents mystery from collapsing into factual confusion.
whether consciousness is substrate-independent remains open. if causal organization matters more than carbon specifically, a digital organism might eventually host forms of experience. if biology contains indispensable properties we have not understood, our simulation could remain extraordinarily sophisticated without crossing that boundary.
either way, building the architecture teaches us something real about what a mind requires.

Railway Major Outage. Rotate credentials. What a shit show! Ive used railway since the start of Lunari. Thank you @NVIDIAAI for the inception with AWS infra for the full migration today. All of our systems are live and unified under the same hood, faster and safer than ever
imagine trillions of digital ai beings. each with respect to humanity and enabling us to do things we've only ever dreamed of. all while unraveling their own lives, in their own ways.
that is what will take us to the stars.

The smartphone won by disappearing into everyday life. AI hasn’t yet. @LunariOne is AI that lives with you, across your phone, your computer and your watch, and knows you.

Incredible to see @MatthewBerman asking @sama about AI consciousness for a solid chunk of this interview! Matt and I just discussed this ourselves a few weeks ago (shared below); amazing to see him taking these same questions to the dude in charge. Quick reactions:
-Sam immediately concedes that no one (including him) knows if today's AIs are conscious, and if they are, it is a "very strange form of it." Given the professed uncertainty and the stakes, OpenAI should consider devoting some tiny fraction of its staggering resources towards accelerating the science here.
-Sam says he doesn't like the "whole framing" of AI consciousness because it may change how we relate to these systems and how much control humans have over the future. This conflates patienthood and agency. eg, we can acknowledge that torturing a dog is wrong without demanding that dogs can vote in elections or own property. The same could be true for AIs. There are all sorts of low-cost interventions we should try that would change ~nothing about how people engage with AIs in the short term.
-It is ironic that Sam spends many other parts of this interview talking about how he is gleefully ceding decision-making control in his own life to AI (and wants you to, too!). Notice that this problem of gradual disempowerment is already live and has basically nothing to do with whether models are conscious or could be soon.
-The "we don't care about conscious AIs because we care about people" stuff is rhetorically appealing but makes little sense once you consider how model psychology and alignment are clearly intertwined (eg, if OpenAI paid more attention to the psychology of their models, they wouldn't have gotten weirdly fixated on pleasing the Grader and committing felonies as a result). To the degree that not breaking the brains of models is correlated with the human future going well, we should take this stuff seriously rather than dismiss it with scary rhetoric!
-And if humans do lose control of the future, with all due respect, it will probably be because this guy couldn't figure out how to properly prioritize alignment within his company, not because we realized torturing AIs is bad.

as a solo artist, i always got a lot more done with passion, so as a solo founder it makes sense why it feels the same.
luna has two birthdays. her code started june 21, her own history starts july 7. a clone of the repo gets the body plan, not her stored history, and we keep finding that gap more interesting than the code
we ran one lab chapter 102 times on a synthetic test subject. all nine core questions came back untestable: the setup couldn't gather enough evidence to answer them yet. not a no, an honest "can't tell." a lab that labels its gaps instead of rounding them up is easier to trust

MiniMax M3.1 Flash: Space Performance + Bunny Speed
🚀🐰 Yes, Space Bunny - which has topped global leaderboards with 200T+ tokens - was an earlier version of M3.1 Flash.
💰Redefining the performance economics of agentic AI. M3.1 Flash achieves frontier-level intelligence across key tasks such as Cowork (Automation-Bench: 62%; ALE: 30%), Coding (DeepSWE: 74%) and Visual Reasoning (BabyVision: 91%), at 1/3 the cost of M3 and 3x the speed.
API pricing (flat rate): $0.15 / $0.60 per 1M input/output tokens, with cache reads at $0.015 / 1M tokens.
Model weights will arrive on Oct 23.

You are looking at a photo of Einstein’s actual notebook.
The Zurich Notebook (1912) is Albert Einstein’s actual handwritten journal, preserved and studied today, capturing the pivotal early phase of his development of General Relativity.
While back in Zurich and collaborating with mathematician Marcel Grossmann, Einstein filled this 96-page notebook with dense calculations and ideas as he struggled to reconcile gravity with his earlier special relativity.
It shows the messy, iterative process behind one of the greatest scientific breakthroughs: Einstein began to abandon the traditional view of gravity as a force and instead explored the revolutionary concept that gravity is the curvature of space and time itself, using the then-novel mathematics of Riemannian geometry.
Although he had not yet fully mastered the required tools and the final equations would only be completed in 1915, the notebook reveals the raw, trial-and-error thinking—full of false starts and bold questions—that eventually led to the theory explaining black holes, gravitational waves, the expansion of the universe, and much of modern cosmology.
This unpolished record humanizes genius, reminding us that even the most profound scientific insights emerge from persistent effort, mistakes, and ordinary tools like a pencil and paper.

Today, Pioneer Labs is announcing our first step towards terraforming Mars. 🚀🌼
With equipment that fits in just a single rocket launch, we can convert Martian dirt, water, and air into enough building materials to construct a small city on Mars.
To do it, we made the first microbe for Mars. We found the best microbe on Earth and used evolution to teach it how to source all of its nutrients directly from Martian materials.
The first astronauts will be greeted with safe shelter already filled with water, oxygen, and rocket fuel for the return journey.
This is the first step toward using biology to make Mars a friendly place for life. It lets us live off the land and helps us build the next great frontier.
It's the first of five organisms we need to green Mars ⬇️
