What do you think a 'standing reserve' is?

The idea that one can be a slave to oneself is, itself, a residue in our own culture left over from first Platonism and then Christianity. Both of which divided man into separate parts, ultimately leading to the view of "I" equating to the rational ego-consciousness or soul that is mentally assaulted from all sides by "the flesh." This, though, when taken to its logical conclusion, leads to a view where the self is essentially a will-less, disembodied, theoretical entity without any desires or emotions of its own. Hence, I reject the idea of self as rational ego-consciousness. Desire, will, emotion, etc are just as much "I" as reason is. Thus, man cannot be a "slave to his desires" because he is his desires, and you cannot be a slave to yourself. The Jedi, instead, reject themselves and pathologize their own desires as some external force, effectively trying to turn themselves into glorified machines.
