🚨SHOCKING - FIR against Malabar: A man walked into a Malabar Gold showroom in Bilaspur with a simple request: exchange his old 22-carat HUID-hallmarked bracelet. The staff ran it through their XRF machine. Once. Twice. Three times. Every reading came back the same: 20 carat. They even told him the hallmark didn’t exist. He called the local jeweller who had sold him the bracelet. The jeweller walked in, confirmed the HUID, and asked them to test it again. Same machine. Same bracelet. Same room. This time an employee adjusted something on the machine. Suddenly the reading flipped to 916 - pure 22 carat. The jeweller recorded everything. The Sarafa Association arrived. Police registered an FIR against the showroom manager and the machine operator. The machine and DVR were seized. This wasn’t a small local shop. This was Malabar Gold “the chain that advertises trust, purity, and BIS standards across India”. One bracelet. Two readings. An 8% gap in gold value. And the only thing that changed was who was watching. If a hallmarked piece can magically lose two carats the moment a customer wants to exchange it, and magically regain them the moment someone pushes back, what exactly is the machine testing? Customers don’t walk into Malabar expecting a calibration error that only appears when they’re selling gold. They walk in expecting the purity printed on their receipt. The FIR is real. The readings are on record. The machine was seized. Malabar still hasn’t explained why the same piece of gold needed a “setting” before it became 22 carat again. Until they do, this isn’t a machine glitch. It’s a business model.

We have witnessed elite class of tourist during our growing up days in 80’s and 90’s and from there we use to get hint of fashion (what’s trending). What class it use to have.. The suave tourist no more visit Nainital now. They ceded that space to Chhapris.

I have been associated with elections right from the nineteen seventies. From Seshan onwards I have known many CECs and ECs well. I have deliberately kept away from the ECI controversy because almost everything said about it is immediately labelled political and biased. But it has now reached a point where silence seems equally wrong. Forget for a moment who is accusing whom. All that matters is that the Supreme Court wants to know how certain decisions were taken and who took them. There should be a record—files, notings, minutes, electronic trails. If something that should exist cannot be produced, that too will have to be explained. What troubles me most is the damage already done. The ECI once carried enormous credibility, including abroad. So did India for conducting elections on an extraordinary scale with an Election Commission trusted to be independent. Whatever the eventual explanation, that reputation has taken a knock. It took decades to build. I hope we understand what is at stake.

Umagarh is the village in Uttarakhand, where famous poetess Late Sushri Mahadevi Vermaji spent her life. The state of the village road is really terrible and villagers have been trying to knock every door for last 14 years but to no avail. We hope our honourable PM Modiji will take notice of the plea of this young girl from our village and direct concerned department to provide us with this basic amenity.

Kedarnath Dham : fewer pilgrims, far more garbage First, look at the crowds. 2023: 19.61 lakh pilgrims 2024: 16.52 lakh pilgrims 2025: 17.68 lakh pilgrims 2026: Over 15 lakh pilgrims so far, till September Now look at the garbage, in metric tonnes, as per the Kedarnath Nagar Panchayat. 2023: 32.58 MT 2024: 26.10 MT 2025: 21.40 MT 2026: 50.30 MT, in just five months from April to August Read that again. In 2025, nearly 18 lakh people came and 21.4 tonnes of waste was recorded. This year, with fewer people so far, the dham has already produced more than two and a half times that. About 20 tonnes of this year's waste is plastic. 18.5 tonnes has been processed, but around 1.5 tonnes still remains. Faith brings us to Kedarnath. Our plastic shouldn't stay behind after we leave.

My reading of the situation in #Uttarakhand tells me that five star hotels, resorts and tourism are being seen as the biggest growth driver across the state. Many pointers like the govt's real estate asset monetisation and infrastructure development are indicating this direction to me. While one may argue that there is nothing fundamentally wrong with this approach, I am not seeing the corresponding focus on developing a grassroots led decentralised social and economic system rooted around healthcare, education, agric/horticulture, migration reduction and the like. This model is akin to developing "gated communities" that are suited for the well heeled, higher end customers; suitable for an aspirational high GDP centric model but perhaps ignoring the interests of large numbers of people who are ill equipped or lack the resources to partake in this model of development. How this shapes up and what impact this will have on millions remains to be seen in the coming years!

Everyone must have seen politicians going from village to village recently celebrating Raksha Bandhan in their constituencies. But this is what happens when the elections are over. In Bhandarigaon, Kanda, Bageshwar, Uttarakhand Sona Rautela, wife of an ex-serviceman, had to be carried nearly 2 km in a doli to reach the road after falling ill. The village still has no road connectivity, while pregnant women reportedly have to walk to the only ANM centre serving six gram panchayats.

@PMOIndia @pushkardhami @ndmaindia

@pushkardhami @PMOIndia VC : @KumaonJagran

I shared this data earlier and am sharing it again. The source is none other than India’s foremost consumer expert, Rama Bijapurkar. It’s good to revisit this from time to time. Our demographic dividend is expected to peak in the next 14 years or so. If we do not grow at least 8% or above in real GDP every year, and ensure that growth is inclusive, we risk being stuck in our current state forever. Whether it’s the central government or state governments, the single minded focus must be on economic growth and people’s welfare. Our social fault lines, based on religion, caste, region, language, and everything else, can wait. If we lose this 14 year window, our country’s future will be seriously compromised. Rama Bijapurkar’s consumer segmentation data: L5 (Affluent): Annual household spend of ₹11.24 lakhs, covering just 25 million people. L4 (Resilient): Annual household spend of ₹5.4 lakhs to ₹7 lakhs, covering 71 million people. L3 (Real Middle): Annual household spend of ₹3.8 lakhs to ₹5.4 lakhs, covering 200 million people. L2 (Strained Mass): Annual household spend of ₹2.2 lakhs to ₹3.8 lakhs, covering 432 million people. L1 (Vulnerables): Annual household spend of ₹1.1 lakhs to ₹2.2 lakhs, representing a massive 707 million people. Note that these figures refer to household expenditure, not individual. If you combine L1 and L2 (Vulnerables + Strained Mass), they account for close to 80% of India’s population. For them, everyday life is a constant struggle. They are literally living on the edge. Not that the others are enjoying ultra luxury, but the sheer scale of vulnerability at the bottom is sobering. 80% of the country is just surviving and that too with great difficulty.
