Next week, on August 12, millions of people around the world will look up to watch a solar eclipse. But while most of us are admiring the view, scientists will be taking advantage of a rare opportunity to study our closest star. When the Moon completely blocks the Sun, the Sun's outer atmosphere, called the corona, becomes visible. This gives researchers a chance to learn more about solar winds, magnetic fields, and solar eruptions that can affect satellites, GPS, radio communications, and even power grids here on Earth. Eclipses also help scientists study how sudden darkness affects Earth's atmosphere, weather, and wildlife. While the path of totality won't pass over Canada, much of the country will still see a partial eclipse. Here in Greater Sudbury, the Moon will cover about 21% of the Sun. 📍 Greater Sudbury eclipse times (EDT) 🌒 Begins: 12:44pm 🌑 Maximum: 1:32pm 🌘 Ends: 2:20pm If you're planning to watch, make sure you have ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses or use a proper solar filter. Regular sunglasses are not safe for viewing the Sun. 1. A view of the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, from Madras, Oregon. 2. We will remain open through 5 pm on Sunday, July 26. Bring a friend! Admission will be free on our final weekend, July 25 & 26. Come be part of this moment — and what comes next.
