How does green adoption change the way energy shocks hit the economy? Can policy protect households who can’t afford to switch to clean tech, without slowing the transition? New paper w/ @chafwbo & Guillaume Schwegler, presented at the NBB Conference🧵

🔹Aggressive monetary response buys small, short-lived inflation gains at large output costs & slows adoption. 🔹Recycling carbon revenues into green subsidies instead of lump-sum rebates doubles adoption but burdens households least able to switch, a key issue for the EU’s ETS2.

Irrational market players wrongly perceive climate policy as a temporary shock and overlook the structural change it represents, with adverse impacts on prices and inflation. GreenCB.co/3TweIj7

A cap-and-trade scheme leads to higher inflation compared to a carbon tax. Under a cap-and-trade, non-rational agents are more likely to worsen inflation and overestimate output. Even more in a delayed mitigation scenario.
