Rising utility bills are now the biggest driver of cost increases for small businesses in Scotland. We are calling on the UK Chancellor to cut the RO levy on small business bills, as it has been for consumers, @colin_borland told @ScottWWright on The Herald Business Podcast.

Our National Chair @tinamckenz has launched today's report by the Small Business Regulatory Taskforce, alongside Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, and Small Business Minister Lord Leong. 14 out of the 15 red-tape-cutting measures put forward by the taskforce - which was co-chaired by Tina - have been agreed to by the government, including a reversal of plans by Companies House to force even the smallest businesses to file full profit-and-loss accounts.

🇪🇺 We had a productive meeting with the new EU Ambassador to the UK, Jukka Salovaara, discussing some of the key issues for small international traders, including how to streamline UK-EU trade and the importance of improving economic cooperation to strengthen security. 🌱 FSB's @tinamckenz raised the importance of the next few weeks for small businesses - with the UK-EU SPS agreement reaching its final stages of negotiation, and the UK-EU Ministerial summit now less than a month away.

We're very pleased to see the Commercial Payments Bill successfully made it through the House of Lords this week - a huge step towards stamping out late payments for good after more than 20 years of FSB campaigning. ⏰ Late payments cost small firms £11 billion every year, but they aren't just bad for small businesses and the self employed; they're bad for growth, local communities, employees, and the economy as a whole. ✅ The Bill will now move to the House of Commons for the next stage of Parliamentary scrutiny.
Too many firms do the work, send the invoice and then get paid late. That's money that could be going towards wages, investment and growth. We're taking action on late payments.

Interested? 📨 Email [email protected] by 13 November to find out more or express your interest.

"Hotels, pubs, restaurants and tourist accommodation providers have reported sharp and unexpected increases in costs following the latest revaluation of non-domestic property in Scotland, leaving many scrambling to find thousands of pounds extra every month to meet their bills. "That’s why The Herald is today launching Reset The Rates, a major campaign for fundamental reform of Scotland's business rates system. "Backed by leading business figures and industry organisations, the campaign argues the current regime is too complex, too unpredictable and increasingly risks holding back sectors that are vital to local economies and communities."
