We couldn't be more proud of Xian Mallory, a @FloridaState assistant professor in @FSUComputerSci who took home the $100,000 grand prize from @ReliaQuest! 🏆 During #FSUDiscoveryDays' “The Quest for What’s Next!” competition on Monday, Mallory pitched Sage, a startup designed to protect personal data, to a panel of judges. Two other teams, both from @FSUartssciences, took home $50,000 each! Olmo Zavala Romero, an assistant professor in @FSUSciComp, earned additional funding for his startup Ariadne, while Xin Zhang, a professor in @StatisticsFSU, benefited his ambitions after his presentation, “Protecting the Rare Label: Error-Controlled Classification for Data Sensitivity.” To check out the full story, visit: fla.st/NLXEOTNE. @FloridaState @FSUResearch

Hristo Chipilski, an assistant professor in @FSUSciComp and @DataScienceFSU, has received @NSF funding to improve nighttime thunderstorm forecasts, research that will help forecasters and communities better prepare for dangerous weather. To learn more about how Chipilski will accurately model nighttime thunderstorms — which often depend on complex atmospheric conditions that are more difficult for weather models to predict than daytime storms — visit: fla.st/HX0QBSEK. @FSUResearch @FloridaState

How field trips can look when you're a student at @FloridaState... 😎 Ming Ye, a professor in @FSU_EOAS and faculty affiliate of @FSUSciComp, recently provided students in his Principles of Hydrology course the opportunity to kayak and canoe the Lake Jackson Aquatic Preserve — only a 20-minute drive from FSU. Lake Jackson is the only freshwater lake system in Florida unaffected by engineering constructions such as dams and canals. Instead of using manmade means to manage the ecosystem, Lake Jackson periodically dries out, which spurs a self-cleansing process that hinders invasive plants and restores conditions for native fish breeding, for example. In getting up close and personal with the lake, students learned more about watersheds and how their quality and quantity can evolve over time. The field trip was preceded by a guest lecture from @LakeJackson850's Sophie Wacongne-Speer, who spoke about the lake’s past, present and future conditions. The students' kayaks and canoes were provided by the Lake Jackson Aquatic Preserve under @FLDEPNews. To learn more about Ye's hydrology research, which was recently funded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, visit: fla.st/OMVOHZMT. 📸 Ming Ye and Laura Short

The Fall 2026 AI Seminar series, hosted by @FSUSciComp, kicked off (literally, see slide two) Aug. 28 with a talk by @FAMUFSUCOE's Christian Hubicki! 🤖 Hubicki's laboratory, the Optimal Robotics Lab, develops new and innovative ways for robots to walk — and even run — on two legs. In addition to his role as an associate professor at @floridastateuniversity, Hubicki is a two-time contestant on "@survivorcbs," placing seventh on season 37 in 2018 and 13th on season 50 earlier this year. Want to learn more about AI's applications in chemistry? Starting Aug. 6, @ChemistryFsu's AI Bootcamp will take place over six sessions, beginning with an introduction to large language models and concluding with a discussion on the benefits, risks, and future of AI in education. Hosted by Assistant Professor Wen Zhu and Cottrell Family Professor Oliver Steinbock, both from @ChemistryFsu, the AI Bootcamp will feature talks by faculty and staff from across @FloridaState — @fsulibraries, @FSUSciComp, @FSUComputerSci, @FSUiSchool and more! There will also be guest lectures from folks affiliated with @PNNLab, @CMUEngineering, @uflorida, @EmoryUniversity, and Synfini. It is not required to attend all six sessions. Each session will be held in the Chemical Sciences Laboratory (Room 1005), except the Aug. 7 session, which will be held in Room 1003. For event details and registration, visit: wzhulab.com/aibootcamp.

As wildfire smoke spreads across parts of Canada and the U.S., @FloridaState experts are available to discuss the conditions fueling the fires, the risks to communities and the science behind wildfire response. From @FSUComputerSci, Yushun Dong (top right) leads the Responsible AI Lab, working on a publicly available data-driven platform of U.S. nationwide wildfires empowered by AI technologies. He is also part of @TheRiderCenter. From @FSUSciComp, Kevin Speer's (bottom right) climate expertise ranges from global ocean circulation to the dynamics of hydrothermal plumes. Recently retired, he served as director of the FSU Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Institute from 2011 to 2026 and was a leading expert on the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires. On Friday, attendees of the Wakulla Springs Robot 3D Mapper Exposition had the opportunity to learn more about Sunfish, the autonomous robot helping @FloridaState researcher Ming Ye 3D map underwater caves in the Wakulla Springs basin! By mapping the basin — which provides drinking water to nearly 10 million people — Ye (@FSU_EOAS / @FSUSciComp) aims to better understand how our water is affected by the geological makeup of the caves it passes through. Ye, other hydrology experts, and the creators of Sunfish all spoke at the event, which also featured a live demonstration of Sunfish's mapping capabilities.
