FORT WORTH, TX - A 23-year-old mother, Avia Lynette Cantrell, is facing CAPITAL MURDER charges after police say she gave birth to a full-term baby girl in a motel bathtub on October 14, 2026, and deliberately left her face down in the water for approximately 30 minutes. According to the arrest affidavit, Cantrell acknowledged that her daughter was MOVING after birth. She reportedly told detectives she later noticed the baby’s feet turning white and assumed she was dead. Cantrell and her boyfriend, 26-year-old Camron Kyjuan Baker, had reportedly been living in Room 205 at the Drummers Inn in Fort Worth for approximately TWO YEARS with three other children. Police allege the couple kept the newborn’s body in a bag beside the bathroom toilet for FOUR DAYS. Baker admitted that neither of them contacted emergency services because they didn’t want to “catch a case.” On October 18, police say Baker placed the baby’s body into a brown overnight bag decorated with flowers and discarded it in a dumpster. That evening, a homeless woman searching through the dumpster discovered the bag. She opened it at a neighboring business and found the newborn. Another individual confirmed what she had discovered, and someone at the motel was alerted so 911 could be called. The following day, Cantrell’s sister-in-law contacted police requesting a welfare check. She reportedly told authorities Cantrell was pregnant, close to delivery, and had a history of pregnancies or births that others didn’t know about. WHAT? When officers initially questioned Cantrell, she DENIED being pregnant. Investigators reviewed motel surveillance footage, including video from June showing Cantrell appearing pregnant. They also located footage involving the disposal of items, including a car seat, near the dumpster. According to the affidavit, Cantrell eventually admitted what had happened. ANOTHER DISTURBING DETAIL: Cantrell reportedly told investigators that Baker had previously disposed of the remains of an earlier miscarriage. That statement is an allegation documented in the investigation. The couple’s three surviving children have reportedly been placed with a relative. Texas has a Safe Haven Law, also known as the Baby Moses Law. A parent unable to care for a newborn can legally surrender an unharmed infant, 60 days old or younger, to approved emergency providers, including hospitals, fire stations, and EMS facilities. There was a legal alternative to abandoning this baby. There was an opportunity to seek emergency medical help. Instead, a full-term newborn lost her life, and her body was concealed for four days. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s official cause and manner of death had not been publicly released in the reports I reviewed.
