just posted 2 more "chapters" of my folk-horror 007 spoof archiveofourown.org/works/34… John Barleycorn in The Man With The Thousandth Face ...for upcoming #70YearsOfBond. So: would anyone publish this - parody-protected? - Fleming re-telling for a modern media-literate audience?

I'm sure it's been covered, but every planet and spaceship - however small? - appears to have Earth gravity and atmosphere
Give me your best Star Wars nitpicks. No reasonable criticisms or analysis, I'm talking real pedantic here.

...and when they do put on breathing apparatus, that makes it even less realistic : ) (I know, it's basically retelling some sort of peripatetic Buck Rogers serial where the sets are supposed to convey all the exoticism...) xitter.cf/DukesTradingco/status/…

Sure. Gravity in a space worm on a small asteroid. Makes a lot of sense.

...but of course, what people actually do get angry about is how the "Holdo Manoeuvre" apparently "breaks the rules" sketchily pre-established regarding lightspeed, shields, lightsabres even - in a universe that may not even have the same laws of physics? xitter.cf/weberju5/status/206426…
Every Sci-Fi writer who wants to do travel between different star systems has to deal with a fundamental problem: The distances are insane. There are multiple ways of tackling this. The first one is to just go really fast, up to a significant fraction of the speed of light. That's HARD. You have to know physics, deal with time dilation and so on; essentially you're forced to build large parts of your story around relativity. The other option is to go "faster than light" without actually accelerating in a conventional sense. That's warp in Star Trek or hyperdrive in Star Wars. You can have the space travel without any of those nasty little issues that relativity introduces into your story. Great! Once you insinuate that you accelerate a mass to near light speed, though, you open up the entire can of worms that comes with it. Your world building then has to deal with the fallout. TLJ does not. It breaks the rules that were set up earlier. It retroactively destroys the plot of 2 of the 3 original movies by making the Death Star completely redundant: Who needs a giant space lazor when you can just strap a hyperdrive to a large stone and ram it into a planet at near light speed? The fact that this nonsense ever got made shows how little respect Rian Johnson has not only for the lore, but also for his colleague who then had the near impossible task of cleaning up this mess (not that it mattered that much; the last sequel movie was an insane clusterfuck in is own right).

belatedly - the headline is semi-ingenious low-key trolling, as it prompted existing Pratchett fans to respond "Lost to history? Not round here!" rather than an outpouring of rival enthusiasm for comedy-fantasy contemporaries eg Tom Holt or Robert Rankin (/now: Yahtzee Croshaw?)
I'm begging at least one whole generation of Anglophone opinion-formers to try reading books for grownups

techbros have reinvented Lars von Trier's Dogville - for estate agents! "...I'm going to remove two of these fixtures and fittings, and if you can demonstrate your knowledge of the Doctrine of Stoicism by holding back your tears, I'll stop"
Why would you build anything without this going forward?

fwiw, I mostly enjoyed "Digger", though not to the degree where I needed to spend ÂŁ19.99 on a commemorative tin to accompany a soft drink & medium popcorn...

fwiw, I'm still on Twitter to recalibrate a (small) number of my opinions which are too *impractically* left-wing for the current climate. I'll definitely leave if: the search function gets any worse, or if the in-browser BSkyB gets a direct "likes" link? xitter.cf/tomcoates/status/20897…
I pop in here every so often and … I mean, you guys here can feel the Overton window you’re operating in getting more and more right wing, right? You’re aware that’s happening?

some good (ad-free?) films on Rakuten, though you have to dig around & they don't stay for very long - 2018's The Hummingbird Project is a fibre-optic tunneling drama loosely based around Michael Lewis's book Flash Boys from 2014? rakuten.tv/uk?content_type=m…

furthermore, Space Ships From The Beyond MAY Be On Their Way To Destroy Our Planet but, a full 2 months later, that hasn't happened either?
So there is a very real possibility that, due to net zero buggering the grid, Britain could experience total power blackouts. The IMF could soon sweep in to cut up our national credit card because we are so in debt no one will lend us any more money. And our Prime Minister is debating pub snacks like a student in Freshers Week. Can we have a serious leader, please?

even Jon Ronson seems to be distancing himself from the term "culture wars", which maybe peaked earlier this year - perhaps pluralised to give it the authority of eg Balkan Wars/ Opium Wars, tho' also evocative of fictional Clone Wars, Eugenics Wars, (Veteran of the) Psychic Wars

you look at the UK pop charts for some random month in 1981 and at the top is "When Words Cut (Kastrationsangst)" by The Montagnards, who met in the Rhyming Poetry Department of Sheffield Polytechnic and sold 3 million copies of their only single.
