Financial assets are necessary but not sufficient for a family to thrive through the generations. I think about Family Capital under these headings: Cultural - the ways of looking at and behaving in the world that have made and will continue to make family members 'successful' in the broadest sense of the word Intrafamily - healthy and mutually beneficial relationships between all family members Human - the knowledge and physical and psychological wellbeing of the individual family members Financial - investments of all kinds Social - the relationships of the family with the wider world, including business networks and philanthropy Structural - the systems that contribute to the maintenance and development of all other forms of Family Capital Follow me if you're interested in Family Capital in all its forms - I'm doing my best to share useful ideas, tactics, and tips. Also, check out @FamilyCapClub if you'd like to be part of the community for stewards of Family Capital...

Time and mathematics have an erosive effect on families - descendants multiply and bonds weaken; capital is divided; systems fall into disuse; good work decays or is forgotten. Continued flourishing of a family requires a culture of maintenance, repair, and new work.

Who wants to join me in a 'Family Capital Club'? SMBTwitter is *amazing* but not somewhere we can talk openly about the nitty-gritty of our situations and plans without wondering who might see it someday. I want to spin up a community for likeminded folks 👇

If you have kids and money, want to see your kids thrive financially and personally, and HATE this take - DM me about the Family Capital Club! 'Generational wealth is weird' is 100% a luxury belief only thinkable by people who are historically blind. PS my kids will work hard
Said it before, but it's time to refresh my hottest take 🔥🔥🔥: Inheritance tax should be 100%. America's obsession with generational wealth is weird and exacerbates economic inequality. Your kids should work hard for their money like everybody else.

Cautionary tale from NZ - just one of the reasons it makes sense to get your family on a solid foundation as per my Family Capital Club (will get back to you all once details firmed up!) @FamilyCapital1

Standard day in the life of a value-minded SMB investor: 9am: Buy used items for my kids on local auction site, made by great small manufacturer 10am: Email owner of manufacturer to see what his succession plans are 11am: He'll talk to his family Yes, I'm weird. Fun though

Family Capital day-to-day: Wanted new couches. 2 and 3-seater w great patina, $15K new and $2.5K to me. They need love - great opportunity for family to work together, and ingrain the lessons that quality lasts; new-but-cheap is dumb; and good stuff is worth buying/preserving.
