The reason AC Milan and Inter Milan share the same stadium and are now building a new one together is largely financial, historical and practical.
Interestingly, despite being fierce city rivals, the two clubs have maintained a business partnership when it comes to their stadium.
Let's break it down.
1. How did they start sharing a stadium?
The stadium is called San Siro Stadium, also known as the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium.
1926: San Siro was originally built for AC Milan.
1935: AC Milan sold the stadium to the Municipality of Milan.
1947: Inter Milan started sharing the stadium with AC Milan.
Since then, both clubs have played their home matches there.
Initially, AC Milan played at San Siro, while Inter played at another stadium. However, Inter eventually moved in, and both clubs have shared the ground for almost 80 years.
2. Why don't they build separate stadiums?
There are several reasons:
A. Financial benefits
Building and maintaining a modern football stadium costs hundreds of millions of euros.
By sharing one stadium, both clubs can:
Split construction costs.
Share maintenance expenses.
Share operational costs.
Generate revenue from commercial activities.
B. Location: San Siro is an established football destination in Milan.
Building a new stadium in the same area allows both clubs to retain their existing fan base, transport connections and commercial ecosystem.
C. Better commercial opportunities
Modern football stadiums are more than football venues.
They generate revenue through:
Corporate hospitality.
Restaurants and bars.
Stadium tours.
Concerts and entertainment.
Naming rights and sponsorships.
Both clubs want to compete financially with Europe's biggest clubs, particularly those in England.
3. Why are they building a new stadium together?
San Siro is almost 100 years old. Although it remains iconic, it lacks some of the modern facilities and commercial infrastructure found in newer European stadiums.
The clubs therefore decided that building a new stadium would be more financially sensible than extensively renovating the existing one.
Some important developments:
November 2025: Both clubs completed the €197 million acquisition of San Siro and its surrounding land from the Municipality of Milan.
October 2026: They unveiled the design of their new stadium, officially named Generali Stadium.
Capacity: Approximately 71,500 spectators.
Architects: Foster + Partners and MANICA.
Construction: Expected to begin in 2028.
Target opening: 2031/32 season, subject to approvals.
4. Does sharing a stadium affect their rivalry?
Absolutely not!
This is perhaps the most fascinating part.
AC Milan and Inter Milan are bitter rivals, and their rivalry is known as the Derby della Madonnina.
Despite sharing a stadium:
They have separate dressing rooms.
They have separate training facilities.
They have different supporters' sections.
They have separate club management and ownership.
They compete fiercely against each other.
On derby day, the same stadium becomes the battleground for two opposing fan bases.
The bigger picture
The relationship between AC Milan and Inter Milan demonstrates something interesting about modern football:
You can be fierce competitors on the pitch while being business partners off it.
Both clubs understand that building and operating a world-class stadium together can be more profitable than maintaining two separate stadiums.
In football terms, they are rivals for 90 minutes but business partners for the long term.

They charge you another N50k to start an investigation
They charge you N150k for mobilization to make an arrest.
If you are a boy they accuse you of being a fraudster
If you are a girl they accuse you of being a prostitute

One day, I went to buy a pack of water from a nearby shop very early in the morning.
I love drinking water in the morning before eating anything, and I realised I had run out of it that day, so I had to get some early.
I later noticed that the woman had been acting strangely towards me, although I didn't think much of it at first.
Whenever I went to buy something, she would reluctantly tell me it wasn't available. But if the item was right there in front of her, she'd reluctantly pick it up and sell it to me.
It wasn't until a few weeks later that someone told me she had said I had a 'bad hand' because the day I 'Opened sales', (bought water from her in the morning) she didn't make many sales.
Since then, I've been careful about buying things too early in the morning. I don't want anybody attributing their lack of sales to me again. 😂
But seriously, does this 'bad hand' thing actually work?

Everyone has a better solution when the deed is done.
You would have done this
You would have collected that
They would have done it like this.
That is what everyone says until you put them in the decision making process and they go completely blank.
Most times when I'm planning out something with my friends, I always tell them to bring all the suggestions and advice now because any form of criticism after the event from them will not be tolerated. We can review the mistakes and do better.
But don't come with you would have when you were there the whole time.
3days ago, I advertised my A54 Samsung on Jiji for ₦450k. A buyer messaged me and offered ₦350k.
I refused.
He increased it to ₦380k. I still refused.
He then said: "₦400k cash today. Final offer.” I agreed.
He came, inspected the phone, paid and left.
That evening, my friend asked: "How much did you sell your phone?”
I replied: "₦400k.” She laughed.
“Ah! You sold it too cheaply. I would have paid ₦430k.”
I asked her: "Why didn't you offer ₦430k when I advertised it?”
She said: "I didn't know you were serious about selling.”
I laughed.😂😂😂
Everybody wants to be the expert after the transaction is over.
