The few of you who have followed me as I've done research for my dissertation I've probably noticed that I've gone quiet for quite some time now.
Unfortunately, due to a combination of physical health issues and mental exhaustion, I have had to pursue a different avenue.
Pursuing a DMA is hard. It's even harder when you have to provide for a family including 2 toddlers under 3. Even harder when I have to work 2 additional jobs while also being a TA just to pay bills. Continuing research while fulfilling everything just isn't sustainable anymore.

I have a very wide skillset.
But I really just want to play horn.
I find it interesting the ways people internally visualize music as they write. Some people have a system of shapes and colors, others think of them through their instrument. I'm not even talking about synesthesia here, purely just the way various people have come to think.
It's always frustrating to me when discussions about the top music schools/conservatories get dismissive about state schools, as if people would only go there if they weren't good enough for the conservatory. People who went to state schools aren't abysmally worse musicians.
Many of the best musicians I'm working with on a regular basis. I mean like...regular, consistent music work in a variety of styles, either didn't go to music school or went to a state school.
I have only gone to state schools and am working more than conservatory grads.
I got to perform with @MannheimSteam last night.
That's a dream I've had for almost 20 years now, specifically to play the horn bit at the beginning of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen. Got to do that also.
It was a great show!
I can announce that I am able to offer horn recording again! I have consistent access to two different spaces, have a proven track record of clean and accurate stems, and phase coherent multitrack sections. All styles from classical to jazz and beyond are available.
February33 is a day that will never come. Long story short, a lot of my goals were said to be too lofty and that they would never happen. So I embraced that and borrowed the specific date from a cartoon show. Also jazz?
So up to this point, when I've been looking into historical, cultural, and commercial factors why some instruments have gotten forcibly typecast into classical and orchestral styles only, I have been looking at it like "why are these instruments kept out of XYZ styles?"
I think looking into research questions from this framing also opens up doors to ask questions about a lot of the shortcomings of modern music academia and music education in general, mainly in the way that it is severely disconnected from music that is being made today.
