Network Chuck has given me the irk for years. What he did is a blatant grift that serves no one but himself. Don't fall for shit like that. And deprive him of what he is so desperate for: attention and reach.

As many folks in our industry have pointed out today: There were no predators in the video. They tried to act as as decoy on a gay hookup app but did not tell the two different men their age. You're welcome to disagree, but some of the key concerns I see here: 1. The introduction asserts they found and chatted with a predator at Defcon who was within feet of them 2. An interview about applying cybersecurity/OSINT skills to combat online predators is reasonable. It then shifts into a “live demo” on a gay hookup app (Sniffies). They used a younger-looking profile photo of someone in their teens, engaged men in chat, and stated they would confront anyone who agreed to meet on camera. 3. There was no coordination with law enforcement, Defcon staff, or other authorities regarding the activity or the claimed incident. 4. From the footage, the decoy did not clearly communicate an underage status, so the people chatting were not fully informed that the account was meant to represent a minor. 5. The individual described as being about 80 feet away explicitly said he was not interested as soon as the decoy implied being underage. That response indicates he was not seeking a minor, and it does not support labeling him a predator based on the interaction shown. 6. The video then encourages more people to get involved in similar efforts after demonstrating an approach that lacked clear age disclosure, proper authorization, and coordination with authorities. The specific focus on a gay hookup app and framing the results as evidence of predators at Defcon is also notable, especially in light of previously publicized homophobic statements made on social media by NetworkChuck. This risks mischaracterizing adult interactions, creating a misleading narrative about the conference, and encouraging uncoordinated misleading actions that could harm actual legitimate advocacy efforts.

Not sure who needs to hear this but.... An LLM doesn't "understand" anything. It is a statistical model that spews out tokens based on probabilities calculated through massive matrix operations and context, not an understanding of the subject matter.

Wow. I woke up to an impressive number of upset people who apparently don’t understand how LLMs work and can’t cope well with me pointing it out. An LLM is a statistical next-token prediction model. That’s how it works. It’s an extraordinarily sophisticated calculator performing math you could theoretically do by hand (if you were sufficiently masochistic). Math doesn’t know what it’s calculating. Pi doesn’t spend its evenings contemplating the nature of circles, and c doesn’t ponder the relationship between matter and energy. That doesn’t make the results any less accurate, impressive, or useful. Between inference requests, an LLM isn’t sitting around thinking. It isn’t reconsidering its answers, wondering whether it made a mistake, contemplating its existence, or questioning whether it’s conscious. Its weights remain fixed (it doesn’t learn), and computation resumes when it receives input. We know this because we designed these systems. The architectures, mathematics, implementations, and research are extensively documented. You can study them yourself. Of course, some people immediately lean into comparisons of biological intelligence or philosophical debates over consciousness because that is what they know. But biological intelligence and artificial neural networks are fundamentally different systems. Similar outputs don’t establish equivalent internal experiences. I experience consciousness directly. I infer that other humans do too because we share biological structures and processes. We don’t have equivalent evidence for an LLM, and nothing about its known operation gives evidence of conscious experience. Which brings me back to my original point. To me, understanding is conscious comprehension. It means being aware of information, recognizing its meaning, and experiencing that comprehension. If I wasn’t conscious I could not understand. We can perform actions unconsciously. We can produce correct results without knowing why they’re correct. But I distinguish those capabilities from consciously understanding what we’re doing. An LLM can solve complex problems, explain difficult concepts, and produce remarkably accurate information. I give it full credit for those capabilities. But producing an answer that we rationalize as understanding isn’t the same as experiencing understanding. You don’t have to agree with my definitions. We can debate functional understanding versus conscious comprehension all day, but that won’t establish whether an LLM actually experiences anything. The right debate is this… Could machines exhibit something different from human consciousness, something measurable, meaningful, and worth studying? I think so, absolutely! I’m entirely open to discussing “machine consciousness” in terms of observable, testable computational properties. We built these systems, we can instrument them, examine their internal mechanisms, and investigate what they’re capable of. That seems far more productive than endlessly arguing over whether a machine experiences life the way humans do. So here’s my question: How would you define machine consciousness, and more importantly, how would you measure it?

Oh fuck off. Honest Bob Jenrick's claim that "4 in 5 new jobs were taken by migrants" is misleading. Jenrick's claim rests on a calculation by the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ), the right-wing think tank founded and chaired by Iain Duncan Smith, which funding-transparency site Who Funds You? gave a D grade, the second-lowest transparency rating, in September 2023. It was then amplified by the Telegraph. While the basic arithmetic roughly holds, at each step the claim drifts further from what the data shows. 1. They are not "new jobs". The figure compares HMRC payroll counts in December 2014 and December 2025. That is a net change, not a count of jobs created. Millions of jobs open and close every year, and most are filled by UK nationals. In fact, people who were non-UK citizens when they registered for National Insurance held 20% of employee jobs in December 2025, up from 12% in 2014. Four in five payroll jobs are still held by UK nationals. 2. The numbers don't relate to individual people. The data counts payrolled employments, so one person with two jobs is counted twice. The Telegraph's own chart says as much. 3. Many of the "migrants" are British. HMRC records nationality once, when someone first registers for National Insurance, and naturalisation is not recorded. Someone who arrived in 2015 and became a British citizen in 2021 is still a "migrant" in this data. HMRC itself says this makes non-UK figures higher than the true counts. 4. "Taken" implies displacement the data cannot show. The CSJ says jobs "went to" non-UK nationals. Jenrick says they were "taken". The figures show who holds jobs, not whether anyone lost out. The Migration Advisory Committee found that, across all immigrants over the full period studied, there was no statistically significant impact of migration on employment. 5. The time frame drives the result. By the Telegraph's own chart, UK nationals accounted for roughly half the payroll growth between 2014 and 2019. The "one in five" figure depends on the 2021 to 2023 visa surge, which happened under the Conservative government in which Jenrick himself was Immigration Minister. 6. Self-employment is excluded. PAYE data leaves out roughly four million self-employed people, so it does not measure all work. In short, a narrow payroll statistic, which counts employments rather than people and permanently labels naturalised Britons as migrants, has become a claim about "new jobs" being "taken". The underlying data supports neither word. This fits a familiar Reform pattern: take a statistic, often from an opaquely funded right-wing think tank, strip away its caveats, and recast it as proof that migrants are taking something from “the British people”. Whatever the intent, the effect is the same: a narrow, heavily qualified finding becomes a story of grievance and resentment. It's wrong, divisive, misleading and pathetic.

Ukraine just hit another Yandex data center inside Russia, and Cloudflare data shows automated traffic coming from Yandex’s network has collapsed to roughly 0.4% of its recent peak. For some perspective, researchers have previously estimated that bots generated roughly 21–29% of U.S. Twitter content. With the U.S. midterms just weeks away, the timing is pretty interesting.

Dryer 4 in my building finishes 11 minutes faster than the others. Nobody knows why. I know because I tested all 8. Dryer 4 takes 39 minutes. The others take 50. This matters because I hate doing laundry. Our building's laundry app lets residents see machine status but doesn't reserve machines. So I wrote a notification that texts me whenever Dryer 4 becomes available. For 6 months, I used Dryer 4 almost exclusively. Then another resident noticed. She asked how I always got the good dryer. I made the mistake of telling her. Within a week, 12 residents had copied my alert. Dryer 4 became impossible to get. People started waiting downstairs for it. Management assumed the machine was malfunctioning because usage was 4x higher than the others. They replaced it. The new dryer takes 51 minutes. I destroyed the fastest appliance in the building by documenting it. Classic IT outcome.
