I'm not a narcissist, but there's definitely some ego involved in how I package my videos.
I've always put my face on my thumbnails. I mean, it's my reaction, or gameplay, it's my channel, and that's the whole point.
In my head, people would see my face and think "ok, what does this guy have to say?" And I always had the argument that if they see my face enough times, eventually they'll click.
Then I read this 1of10 tweet about the 2-phase thumbnail. Your face works on people who already know you, but once YouTube pushes your video to strangers, your face doesn't do anything for them. They just want to see the thing.
I almost didn't test it because I already knew what I wanted the answer to be. But on my new Valorant video I made two thumbnails, one with my face and one without, and let YouTube decide.
As soon as I saw them side by side, I could tell the one without my face was cleaner. So I stopped the A/B test early. 66% of the watch time went to the faceless one. Mine got 34%.
Kind of a blow to the ego ngl. You want people to see YOU. But I'm learning packaging isn't about me. It's about getting the click from someone who's never heard of me. YouTube is a psychology game and I'm finally taking it seriously. The video did 1.7k on day one and it's still climbing, so I can't argue with it.
Not every video is gonna go faceless. But this format? I'll be using it again for sure.
No one ever talks about this YouTube hack...
We call it the 2-phase thumbnail.
When you post a new video, YouTube pushes it to your core audience first.
Those are the people who subscribe and watch your videos regularly.
They also recognize your face.
So using it in the thumbnail catches their attention and gets them to click.
But once your video starts gaining more views, YouTube will start pushing it to a much wider audience.
Including a lot of people who have no idea who you are.
So your face doesn't do anything to convince them to click.
That's when you switch your thumbnail to a proven format and remove your face from the picture entirely.
Because at this point you already know the video is performing, all you have to do is repackage it so it appeals to a wider audience.
And the best way to do that is by borrowing your composition from a winning thumbnail format like the video below.
How hasn't YouTube changed how gifting membership works yet?
I want to gift memberships to my viewers who spend their time in chat with me but it ends up going to people who have never once interacted with the livestream🤦🏽♂️

Something about the vct stream and matches starting with or with me forced me to change.
For a long time, I’ve always wanted to be in control of my change and action, but Im quickly realizing the importance of also having that external push and/or source of direction.
I'd like to make a video explaining my thoughts better, writing is hard lol.
Im gonna miss the 2am and 5am VCT streams.
That stuff fixed my sleep schedule like nothing has ever done before.
For months/years I've been struggling to sleep on time.
I guess I just needed to not want to miss my favourite team play.
I wanted to show up bringing the best energy for the watch parties and that forced me to adjust accordingly.
I hope to carry that same level of discipline and intentionality into all aspects of my life
