In Celtic mythology deer are connected to the fairy realm or Otherworld. They are messengers associated with spirits, or gods who may shape shift into the form of deer. Some tales say they are “fairy cattle" herded and milked by an otherworldly woman.

November is the month of 'Holy Souls.' Some believe that butterflies & moths are transmigrating souls on their way from this world to the next so treat them kindly should they pass. (art Frank McNab, contemporary) #FairytaleTuesday

Norse myth tells of valkyries riding battlefields gathering the heroic dead to lead them to Valhalla. Observe the image, the poppies at the Valkyrie’s feet, symbols of Remembrance worn in November to honour and respect the sacrifice of our own fallen heroes.

In Norse mythology the god Odin known as the Allfather, ruler of Asgard, is a master of wisdom, war and magic. Legend tells that he sacrificed one of his eyes that he may drink from the well of wisdom and improve his knowledge.

Will-o’-the-wisps, ghostly orbs of light seen in the darkness of night. Fairies, or lost souls who could enter neither Heaven nor Hell fated to wander the earth forever. Appearing as a welcome light, they seek to lead the unwary to their death.

The Erinyes, or the Furies, pursued people who had done wrong. 'Sophocles calls them the daughters of Gæa and Scotos (darkness of night). Æschylus simply terms them the daughters of the Night.'

Welsh lore tells of “Y Tylwyth Teg” — the fairies. Within there exists “y bwabach” a household fairy whose appearance is goblin like, similar to the English brownie. Mostly helpful, he assists with the daily chores of the household for a clean, comfortable home.

If the world is getting a little too much may I recommend the inexplicably obsolete word ‘latibulating’, from the 17th century? To latibulate is to find a cosy corner somewhere and hide in it.

👻 “I can’t go through the Haunted Wood, Marilla,” cried Anne...There’s a white lady walks along the brook just about this time of the night and wrings her hands and utters wailing cries. 💀 And there’s a headless man stalks up and down the path and skeletons glower at you . 👀
