In my new opinion piece for @NikkeiAsia, I call on YouTube to close their loophole allowing PRC-based creators to monetise content on the platform.
If they don’t, they’re effectively subsidising state-backed propaganda & disinformation.

Since widespread protests broke out in China following a deadly fire in Urumqi that many blame on strict COVID-prevention measures we have tracked 43 public protests across 22 Chinese cities, including 4 on Monday.
See this map for details and DM me for underlying data.
Good to see the Senate re-establish a Cmte on Foreign Interference Through Social Media. My colleagues @ASPI_org have produced several reports on this (a great recent one here: aspistrategist.org.au/musks-…). It remains a tough and unaddressed policy space. innovationaus.com/online-for…

Chinese influencer Li Ziqi has 17.2 million followers on YouTube.
She's the biggest by far, but there are thousands of other China-based accounts on the platform.
But wait. Isn't YouTube blocked in China? What gives?
Here's how it all works. 🧵
New @ASPI_ICPC report out today on Digital ID. This is a really tricky policy space in Australia because of a long history of failure and overreach. But there is a lot of opportunity if it's well done: more privacy, more convenience and ⬆️productivity aspi.org.au/report/future-di…
Key things we need: 1) Legislation that protects citizens and provides a lot of transparency; 2) Ban attribute vending; 3) Roll-out the scheme to businesses (& in parallel disincentivise personal identity data collection); 4) Give states a say in the governance.
@RajivShahMDR has written a good brief on the key issues that need addressing for this $600M+ scheme to work. Take a read: aspi.org.au/report/future-di…
