Christopher Tolkien kept botanical notebooks, recording the plants and flowers he saw. Here is one page, noting “a particularly fine year for Orchids” in 1964

Watching the ROTK documentaries for the Jackson movie, I suddenly realise that I am close friends with Brian Sibley. I have translated @JohnGarthWriter. I met Tom Shippey and we shared some interesting conversations. I have talked to John Howe... I am a very lucky person.

This is the magazine for the military hospital in Birmingham where #Tolkien stayed from November 9, 1916 (until late January 1917) after leaving the Somme. It was read by convalescing soldiers and featured poems, jokes, and accounts of entertainments for those in the hospital.

110 years ago today, on 27 October 1916, the young J.R.R. Tolkien fell ill with trench fever. He had been serving as a signalling officer with the 11th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers during the Battle of the Somme. The illness took him out of the front line, and by early November he was on his way home to hospital in England. Many of the men he served with were not so fortunate. On Remembrance Sunday we'll share more about Tolkien and the Great War. #TolkienSociety #JRRTolkien
